Name

Karibu comes from Swahili, meaning welcome, and close.

Goal

We aim to connect communities with similar interests on our platform. Users share locations with each other by creating map markers with a title and description that other members of the community can upvote and downvote. Anything from local jobs and interesting places, to good fishing spots and garage sale locations can be shared and discussed among users.

User experience

If no existing community fits your needs, don't fret. Users can easily create their own group and invite others with similar interests, eventually creating their own active community. As of now, there is both a mobile app for iOS, and a desktop-friendly web browser version at http://karibuapp.me.

Origin

The idea came from me and my roommate (Gerry Zhou) brainstorming the possibility of a "reddit for locations" and evolved from there into its own platform.
