Inspiration

Our inspiration came from watching people at karaoke night. We saw how much fun it was, but we also saw people scrolling endlessly through songbooks, friends trying to decide on a duet, and singers nervously waiting to talk to the busy KJ. We realized karaoke wasn't just about singing; it was about connecting. We’ve seen it create friendships, help people mourn and celebrate together, and we even saw a couple get married after meeting at a karaoke night we were at! We wanted to build something that made those connections even stronger and helped the venues build a real community.

The Karaoke Experience Re-Imagined

As Karaoke Jockeys (KJs), we are always looking for ways to bring technology into the experience. With this project, we are well on our way to building something commercial that we ourselves would use on our sets, and eventually re-sell to other KJs. Karaoke is a complicated landscape from a licensing perspective, so we wanted to focus on the user and singer experience first. Perhaps the Chainsmokers can make some connections for us, and help us create our own karaoke versions of songs :)

What it does

KaraML is a smart karaoke app that helps you connect with your friends and the KJ to pick the perfect songs. It has a chat feature so you can plan your set together, and it even has an AI that can analyze your taste (voice was in the works) to recommend songs that will make you sound incredible. For the venue, it makes the whole night run smoother and keeps everyone engaged, which helps bring in more business and creates a loyal crowd.

How we built it

We're kids, so we used the coolest tools we could find! We used an AI development environment called bolt.new to bring our idea to life. We used its powerful backend tools to build a system that could handle lots of people using the app at once. We integrated advanced AI that listens to a clip of your voice to figure out your range and then suggests songs. We spent a lot of time designing it to be super easy and fun to use on any phone.

Challenges we ran into

Getting the AI voice analyzer to work perfectly was a big challenge. At first, it would get confused by background noise or mistake a high note for a random squeak! Making the chat work instantly without any lag was also tricky, because no one wants a slow conversation. We also worked really hard to make sure the app looked and worked great on every single type of phone, which took a lot of testing.

What's next for KaraML

We want to bring the KaraML experience to more venues everywhere! We're dreaming up new features, like team karaoke battles and organizing theme nights through the app. We also want to add a way for you to share videos of your amazing performances with friends. Our main goal is to just keep finding new ways to use technology to make karaoke the best night of the week for everyone. We also want to be able to directly upload licensed karaoke videos, and make our own karaoke version maker using AI.
