Inspiration
Kapitbahay - Nearest Neighbor (KNN) takes inspiration from the Philippines and the importance of community in South East Asia. It's more than common to approach your neighbors and friends for meals, ingredients, or even their presence by offering food of your own. We aim to bring this same community back here to college towns in order to create that support that many young adults such us as need.
What it does
KNN is a social mobile app that connects already existing friends with one another to create a fun environment to trade food with one another. Similar to systems such as Roblox game Adopt Me, users are encouraged to request trades and barter if the offer is not as appealing as it needs to be. To promote the social aspect, KNN includes a personal score of trades completed and a gallery of photos that can be taken at the moment the deal was followed through with. Visually, it takes inspiration from provinces of the Philippines that usually have small but strong community of support. We aim to create similar webs with our users to support users and create opportunities for them and their friends to bond.
How we built it
Using the AI workshop with Assurance, this project was made with controlled environments in Figma Make as well as Claude. We implement a tech stack of:
Front End: React Native + Expo Back End: Node JS Database: Supabase
The first step to creating this project was planning the environment with our own personal Agent.md and a PRD written by our team for a controlled vision of the project. Once made, we were able to develop and design a front end alongside the database with assistance of our AI tools and connect it all afterwards.
Challenges we ran into
Translating the Design made by Figma Make into the actual React Native format. Developing a backend. Problems with installing dependencies.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Learning how to use Supabase Proud of our UI Project Development (We would use this)
What we learned
Learned how to use Supabase, what policies are, triggers and function, and buckets. Schema design and how relational database can be formatted in order to mimic the function of lists (many to many)
Version control and terminal. Checkout, Creating Branches, and using terminal for other things such as making directories.
AI environments and how to make a proper .MD file in order to create organized code. The importance of documentation and testing.
What's next for Kapitbahay Nearest Neighbor
The idea itself can be scaled to even more specific/general places. One of the ways we thought we could expand is to make the UI more interactive with things such as decorations in the house/village, transition animations, and a status to let villagers know you are out on a grocery trip and to request items from them.
There was also talks on how this app could work with certain devices such as a Samsung Fridge. Using sensors and AI, there can be a way to scan the fridge and automatically add it to the app itself and have this be a special in fridge app to share food with other users.
Another implementation we would like to include is a public village much like how Life 360 circles work. Instead of each user having a personal village, the village would be shared between the users and who is invited into it for that more live feel.
