Inspiration

Kalevala was inspired by the ancient Finnish creation myth and the emotional core of its protagonist, Ilmatar—a spirit wandering alone in the sky before shaping the world. I wanted to reimagine that story through a cinematic lens, exploring themes of loneliness, transformation, and cosmic birth. The project grew from a fascination with mythology, atmosphere, and world-building, and from the desire to reinterpret a cultural epic with new visual storytelling tools.

What it does

Kalevala retells the origin of the earth as a visual, animated myth. It follows Ilmatar as she descends from the sky, is swept into the sea, calls out in isolation, encounters a dove, becomes the vessel for cosmic creation, and ultimately shapes the world itself. The project blends narrative, motion design, and AI-generated imagery to create an immersive short film that captures the emotion and scale of the legend.

How we built it

The entire film was created using StoryMachine.ai as the primary storytelling engine. Story Structure: I wrote the script scene-by-scene. Generation Pipeline: StoryMachine.ai was used to sequence scenes, generate visual boards, and maintain continuity across environments, characters, and transitions. Visual Output: I iterated on key frames—Ilmatar in the sky, the cloud staircase, the storm, the dove, the cosmic egg, and the formation of islands—using StoryMachine’s toolset to refine palettes, atmosphere, and mythic tone. Consistency: Leveraged StoryMachine.ai’s character and environment controls to keep Ilmatar recognizable and ensure the cosmic aesthetics stayed cohesive. Editing: Adjusted prompts and transitions within StoryMachine.ai to create smoother, more cinematic flow between scenes. Narration: Finally added the narration in capcut, using elevanlabs, this helped tie everything together.

Challenges we ran into

  1. Maintaining character continuity across multiple scenes and angles.
  2. Controlling lighting and color transitions, especially during cosmic creation shots.
  3. Getting AI to interpret symbolic moments—like the eggs, the dove, and the birth of the universe—without distorting mythology.
  4. Ensuring the pacing of the story felt coherent and cinematic rather than fragmented.
  5. Achieving stable water and sky physics in sequences involving storms or sinking.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Creating a fully cohesive narrative grounded in mythology yet visually reimagined. Achieving a consistent Ilmatar character across sky, sea, storm, and cosmic environments. Crafting a visually strong climax where the universe is born from the iron egg. The final reveal of “KALEVALA” spelled in water and foliage, which became a powerful concluding image. Turning an ancient epic into an accessible, emotional, and modern short film.

What we learned

How to use AI to build mythic-scale world-building across multiple scenes. The importance of prompt specificity for continuity, lighting, and emotional tone. How to balance symbolism with clarity in visual storytelling. How to iterate quickly and refine sequences to preserve narrative flow. That AI can amplify traditional stories in fresh, cinematic ways when guided with precision
