Inspiration

Heart disease is one of the leading causes of pregnancy-related deaths in California, with roughly 80% of cardiovascular-related pregnancy deaths deemed preventable. We learned that heart disease is seen through a male-centric lens, when in reality, it affects women just as much, if not more. Since women present with different symptoms, they are often dismissed for stress or anxiety. Bias and lack of awareness run rampant, and this is why we built Kairos.

What it does

Kairos bridges the gap between pregnancy and long-term heart health by syncing wearable data (Apple watch, Fitbit, blood pressure cuff) to monitor user's vitals in real time. We collect information about their past/ongoing symptoms and family history to keep track of their health status and trigger warnings in the event that they should visit a healthcare professional. We provide self-advocacy scripts, emergency resources, a ZotGPT-powered chatbot for symptom questions and doctor visit prep, and a camera-based blood pressure detection system. We also wanted to emphasize the mental health of our users, a factor which is often overlooked in relation to heart concerns, so we provide mood tracking and a voice-transcription journaling feature.

How we built it

  • Frontend: React Native with Expo for cross-platform mobile development
  • Backend: Node.js with Express, PostgreSQL database
  • Authentication: Supabase for secure email login
  • Health Data: mock Apple HealthKit integration for real-time vitals (heart rate, BP, HRV, steps)
  • AI: ZotGPT API for conversational chatbot and visit summary generation
  • Camera: rPPG (remote photoplethysmography) image recognition for facial swelling/pallor detection

Challenges we ran into

  • Learning new skills we have never worked with before (Figma, ZotGPT API, rPPG)
  • Ensuring our product can contribute new, innovative features to the existing solution
  • Considering HIPPA policies for patient data privacy

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Building a functioning MVP with login flow, hi-fi design, camera testing, resources, and chatbot functionality
  • Creating a self-advocacy page that gives women precise language that can be used to push back if dismissed at the doctor's
  • Pushing our limits and learning on the fly as well as communicating clearly to determine what is feasible in this time duration

What we learned

  • Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of pregnancy-related death, yet a majority of women don't know how to recognize the signs
  • Many successful solutions have been implemented to combat this issue, but the trouble is linking them together to have one cohesive resource

What's next for Kairos

  • Connect to healthcare provider portals (Kaiser, Epic) for seamless user experience
  • Expand to non-Apple users
  • Look into grants which can serve low-resource communities and keep the software free/low-cost
  • Connect with community health workers and promotoras to curate mental health support
