Inspiration

Software development involves many repetitive tasks, from understanding requirements and writing code to debugging, testing, and deployment. Developers often have to switch between multiple tools and workflows, which can slow down the development process.

We wanted to explore a different approach: What if developers could describe their requirements in natural language and collaborate with an AI-powered engineering assistant to manage different stages of software development?

This idea led us to create Kairo, an early-stage prototype of an autonomous AI-powered DevOps and coding agent.

Our vision is to make software development more accessible, organized, and efficient through intelligent AI agents.

What We Are Building

Kairo is a prototype of an AI-powered development platform designed to bring multiple software engineering workflows into one workspace.

The concept is built around an agent-based architecture where specialized AI agents can assist with different development activities, including:

  • Planning: Breaking project requirements into smaller, actionable tasks.
  • Coding: Assisting developers with code generation and implementation.
  • Debugging: Analyzing errors and suggesting possible fixes.
  • Testing: Supporting code validation and identifying potential issues.
  • Project Management: Organizing projects, repositories, tasks, and execution workflows.
  • DevOps Assistance: Exploring ways to simplify deployment and development operations.

Rather than positioning Kairo as a finished autonomous engineering system, our prototype demonstrates the foundation and direction of how these capabilities could work together.

How We Are Building It

We are developing Kairo using a modular frontend and backend architecture.

Our approach focuses on creating a centralized developer workspace and establishing the foundation for AI agent orchestration.

The prototype uses:

  • Frontend: A modern web interface for interacting with the platform and managing development workflows.
  • Backend: A modular architecture intended to coordinate agent operations and application services.
  • Database: Supabase for application data and persistence.
  • AI Integration: An agent-oriented approach for connecting AI capabilities with development tasks.
  • Development Tools: Git and GitHub for version control and collaborative development.

We are building the application incrementally, validating individual components and improving integrations as the prototype evolves.

Challenges We Faced

One of our biggest challenges was designing a system that could bring different software development workflows together without becoming unnecessarily complex.

We had to think carefully about frontend and backend communication, modular architecture, database organization, and how multiple AI agents could eventually coordinate their tasks.

Another challenge was balancing our ambitious vision with the time and resources available during the hackathon.

Instead of attempting to build everything at once, we focused on establishing the core application structure and developing a prototype that demonstrates our overall approach.

What We Learned

This project helped us understand that building an AI-powered engineering platform requires much more than integrating an LLM.

We explored agent orchestration, API integration, database design, modular application development, and the importance of reliable execution workflows.

We also learned how to divide a large technical vision into smaller development milestones and work collaboratively to bring an idea closer to reality.

What's Next

Kairo is currently at the prototype stage, and we see this as the starting point rather than the final product.

Our next steps include improving agent orchestration, enabling more reliable code execution, integrating automated testing, strengthening debugging capabilities, and exploring end-to-end DevOps automation.

We also see opportunities to explore advanced technologies such as GPU-accelerated workloads and quantum computing research for future agent capabilities, where technically appropriate.

Our long-term vision is to build an intelligent engineering workspace where developers can collaborate with AI agents throughout the software development lifecycle — from an initial idea to a working application.
