Inspiration
The idea of Kaeli came from realizing that groceries management can be complicated sometimes, so I was searching for a solution to manage my groceries and my shopping list and to know what I have and what I need to buy all in one place.
What it does
Kaeli helps you manage your grocery by saving all your products that you buy and easily and quickly add them to your inventory or shopping list and in addition you can add some recipes with ingredients related to your products so you can track what recipe you can make. In addition Kaeli gives you the ability to share and synchronise in real time all your home data with another person that lives with you.
How we built it
Kaeli is completely Apple native, built in SwiftUI, SwiftData and CloudKit for sharing capabilities.
The advantage of using CloudKit is to remove the friction of creating an account, users can save and synchronise their data seamlessly and with all their data remaining private.
RevenuCat was used to manage the subscription to access premium features like online image search, online recipes search and for the sharing capabilities.
Challenges we ran into
The UX design of Kaeli is extremely challenging because the main goal of the app is to remove the most friction possible and yet stay powerful! Every functionality, even the one that looks simple in the beginning has to be deeply thought out to give the maximum of intuitiveness.
Another big challenge of this app was to build the CloudKit sync engines around SwiftData, the management of the background work of uploading and fetching changes, for the user private data (for another device of the same user) or the shared data of another user as long of conflict resolutions, threads management and a lot of other things to manage to make this works.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
First, this is my first published app! So thats the first thing im pride of and this app is the result of a lot of thinking efforts to make the best experience I can offer, all the codebase and architectural choices was carefully thought, nothing in this app where vibe coded I wanted to all the control of my app and my codebase.
Of course the challenges above and their resolution were a source of a lot of satisfaction for me, seeing my effort come to life in my app made me so happy and proud.
What we learned
I learned so much in the process of building this app that its hard or maybe impossible to mention all of it. From design to code and everything around truly improved my development capabilities.
I should also mention RevenuCat that I wanted to implement in my app for the Shipaton but I was so much surprised of how much easy it makes to manage subscriptions and payments in general, even for an app like Kaeli that live in only one platform (yet) RevenuCat has saved me so much time!
What's next for Kaeli
A lot of improvements have yet to come! AI capabilities, Siri integration, add and improve the functionalities by listening to users feedbacks. This is a first version and there’s room for so many improvements!
