Inspiration
The project was inspired by the need for sustainable waste management solutions and the potential of insects as a valuable protein source for animal feed. Vermicomposting and BSF farming were selected for their ability to convert organic waste into usable products, reducing landfill waste and providing a cost-effective alternative to traditional feed sources.
What it does
Vermicompost and black soldier fly (BSF) farming are both methods of organic waste management that produce valuable byproducts. Vermicomposting uses earthworms to break down organic matter, creating nutrient-rich vermicompost, a type of fertilizer. BSF farming utilizes black soldier fly larvae to consume and process organic waste, producing frass (a type of compost) and BSF larvae (a high-protein animal feed source
How we built it
all involve using living organisms to break down organic waste, but they utilize different species and methods. Vermicomposting uses worms to decompose organic matter into nutrient-rich vermicompost. Black soldier fly (BSF) farming involves raising BSF larvae to consume and convert organic waste into frass, which can be used as fertilizer, and the larvae themselves can be used as animal feed.
Challenges we ran into
Optimal Conditions: Maintaining the right temperature, humidity, and moisture levels for each system proved challenging, especially in Gaborone's climate. Material Sourcing: Sourcing consistent and affordable bedding materials, substrates, and food waste sources required effort and time. Pest and Disease Control: Preventing the spread of pests and diseases, especially in the BSF systems, required diligent monitoring and preventative measures. Production Consistency: Achieving consistent larval growth and compost production was a challenge, requiring adjustments based on observations and experimentation
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Establishing a business that reduces environmental waste impact, mitigate climate change, provide animal proteins and increase plants yields
What we learned
Extensive research and practical experimentation were key to learning how to implement each system
What's next for Kaduvest
To implement the project at a full scale
