Inspiration

The youth is one of Indonesia’s most valuable assets. With more than 68 million people aged from 10 to 24, Indonesia’s youth force is just beginning. Amongst the many youth, are students - which we believe is key to Indonesia’s future. We are students too, and the inspiration of our app came from the issue that many students would like to build their skills outside of the classroom, but did not know where to look. Oftentimes, there is inadequate exposure for opportunities that students can join and participate in. For example, on social media platforms like Instagram, it is difficult to search for specifics in their search bar feature. Our app, KACA transcends borders and provides equal opportunities and accessibility for all kinds of students alike. KACA was developed to aid students in realizing their maximum potential. Through building upon their unique and innate talents, we could equip students and the youth with important experiences that could translate and help them in later endeavours.

What it does

KACA is a mobile app that provides an online interface that fosters an environment conducive towards students who are in pursuit of an assortment of extracurricular activities to polish their resume. This app will drive youth to connect with diverse groups of people in their communities through volunteer and outreach by pairing them with a wide array of organizations that run in parallel to their field of interests. Aside from opening up opportunities for inexperienced youth to hone their skills and reach their full potential, this app is also beneficial towards the organizations displayed throughout the app. By expanding their exposure through blog posts within the app, they gain more recognition. With more people aware of its existence, they can accept more recruits who can then carry out the purpose of their organization more effectively. Furthermore, our app is a good bridging point between student life and work life as it opens windows to experiences that simulate the work environment. Simply put, this app is the perfect transportation to a world outside of school.

How we built it

We built our app prototype using a no code app builder called ‘Thunkable’ that functions on the basis of block coding. We incorporated Google Sheets for storage of details of blog posts. Additionally, we also used firebase for user authentication during the sign up/sign in process as well as cloudinary to store pictures and images.

Challenges we ran into

During our brainstorming session, we had multiple disagreements as we each had completely different ideas for the app we wanted to develop. Since we had spent so much time compromising all of our ideas into the app we now have, we felt that it was difficult to manage what little time we had left to complete our app and pitch video before the final submission.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of how we were able to form a functioning app within the limited time constraint. At first, we thought that creating an app within a few days was impossible, but we overcame the time adversity by splitting tasks and delegating roles, allowing for a more efficient system.

What we learned

Through this experience, we learned how to work together as a team. Although we had different ideas and approaches, we learned to effectively communicate and allow the best of both worlds to form a coherent result. We also learned to work under pressure and to work with a time limit which allowed us to develop our critical thinking and decision-making skills. Additionally, the hackathon provided an excellent opportunity to network with industry professionals, mentors and most importantly other participants. Engaging in conversations with these individuals not only enriched our understanding of the field but also opened doors to potential collaborations and future opportunities.

What's next for KACA

Aside from fixes and further detailed improvements, we plan to add a chat feature that will allow students to converse and connect with other students alike. In the future, we plan on advertising the app to allow for more users and more organizations to utilize KACA.
