## Inspiration

What it does Inspiration

When I was in school, I relied heavily on YouTube to prepare for exams because it provides access to some of the best teachers and educational content for free. However, every study session followed the same pattern. I would start watching a lecture, get distracted by recommended videos, switch to messaging apps to discuss doubts with friends, open another application for notes, and eventually lose focus.

As I spoke with other students, I realized this wasn't just my experience. Students don't actually have a content problem—they already have access to excellent educational resources. The real problem is that the platforms we use every day were never designed for focused, collaborative learning.

That inspired me to build K12Learn2Gether a platform that transforms YouTube into a structured, distraction-aware learning environment where students can study together, stay accountable, and build consistent learning habits.

What it does What it does

K12Learn2Gether is an AI-powered collaborative study platform designed for K-12 students.

Instead of replacing YouTube or teachers, it enhances the learning experience around the educational content students already trust.

The platform allows students to:

Sign in securely using Google Authentication. Create or join collaborative study rooms. Watch curated educational YouTube lectures together. Ask questions through a shared AI Study Coach. Set daily study goals and build streaks by completing those goals. Track genuine focus time with distraction-aware study sessions. View learning analytics that encourage consistency instead of last-minute studying.

To make study tracking meaningful, the platform pauses both the lecture and the focus timer whenever the student switches tabs, ensuring that recorded study time reflects actual engagement rather than simply leaving the application open.

Instead of a traditional group chat, each study room includes a shared AI Study Coach that keeps discussions centered on the lesson, reducing off-topic conversations while encouraging collaborative learning.

How we built it How we built it

K12Learn2Gether was built during OpenAI Build Week using modern web technologies.

The application uses Gemini to power the shared AI Study Coach.

Throughout development, OpenAI Codex and GPT-5.6 played an important role in accelerating the project.

Codex helped implement features, debug issues, refactor components, and improve the overall engineering workflow.

GPT-5.6 acted as a technical collaborator by helping analyze architecture decisions, improve the user experience, review implementation strategies, and refine both documentation and product design.

Challenges we ran into Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was designing a study environment that genuinely encourages focus instead of simply measuring screen time.

We needed to ensure that study progress reflected real learning, so we implemented logic that pauses both the lecture and the focus timer whenever students leave the study session.

Another challenge was collaborative learning. Traditional group chats often become distractions rather than learning tools. We redesigned collaboration around a shared AI Study Coach, allowing every participant in a room to ask questions and learn together while keeping conversations focused on the lesson.

On the technical side, integrating Firebase Authentication, Firestore, real-time synchronization, deployment, and designing a scalable architecture required multiple iterations and careful testing.

Accomplishments that we're proud of Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud that K12Learn2Gether focuses on solving the real problem instead of creating another content platform.

Rather than competing with YouTube, we built a better learning environment around it.

Some highlights include:

A distraction-aware collaborative study workspace. Shared AI assistance for group learning. Genuine focus tracking with automatic pause detection. Goal-based streaks that reward consistency instead of passive screen time. A modern, scalable architecture built during OpenAI Build Week. What we learned What we learned

This project taught us that building AI features is only one part of creating a great product.

The bigger challenge is understanding the actual user problem and designing technology that solves it.

We also learned the importance of product architecture, real-time collaboration, authentication, AI integration, and creating an intuitive user experience while balancing performance and scalability.

OpenAI Codex and GPT-5.6 significantly accelerated our development process, allowing us to iterate faster while making informed engineering and product decisions.

What's next for K12Learn2Gether What's next for K12Learn2Gether

This project is just the beginning.

Our future roadmap includes:

Support for additional boards and grade levels. Smarter AI-powered personalized study plans. Enhanced collaborative classroom features. Teacher and mentor dashboards. Long-term learning insights. Mobile application support. More advanced focus analytics and productivity insights.

Our vision is simple:

Students don't need more educational content. They need a better environment to learn.
