Inspiration

The drive to solve the irony of having global food insecurity while at the same time experiencing food losses.

What it does

K-Kuza(Kilimo Kusa) is a mobile app that streamlines the process of transportation by providing chances for buyers and sellers to merchandize fresh agricultural crops within given on-line platform. Users could share farming tips as well as learn achievable farming tips from agricultural experts.

How we built it

We formed a team of six students from various backgrounds: business marketing, computer engineering, computer programming to build a prototype. The software has a mobile front end app and the back end script running the machine within structured algorithm by using X-code, Swift, and Flask. We used a small dataset of mango images obtained from the internet to train and define boundaries for identifying input images.

Challenges we ran into

Because IBM bluemix has a steep learning curve, we could not deploy our Django framework into the application. We propose that IBM bluemix can be more userfrieldly in terms of uploading a configuring our framework.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We came up with the idea that is both achievable in reducing food waste and in increasing returns of the food yields.

What we learned

New scripting techniques, and modelling business ideas shared by other team members.

What's next for K-Kuza

We are optimistic of getting an interested partner or an investor who can finance the project for prototype completion, achieving commercialization ideas.
