Inspiration
We were inspired by a simple but profound truth: poverty is not a single wall, but a fortress with four interconnected walls—immediate hunger, systemic exclusion, financial instability, and health vulnerability. Solving one in isolation is not enough. A person who finds a meal today can be pushed back into crisis by a medical bill tomorrow.
Our inspiration was to stop chipping away at individual walls and instead build a single, powerful tool to help people overcome all four. This gave birth to JyotiSetu ("The Bridge of Light"), a project designed not just to offer aid, but to build a dedicated bridge for each of these challenges, illuminating a clear path to self-reliance.
What it does
JyotiSetu is a holistic digital ecosystem that empowers users to dismantle the barriers of poverty through four dedicated, integrated pillars:
Pillar 1: Annapurna (Immediate Nutrition) This pillar addresses the most urgent need: hunger. It provides a real-time, community-verified map of free food distribution points. To ensure no one is left behind, it includes an SMS alert system for users without smartphones, providing immediate stability.
Pillar 2: Adhikar-Khoj (Access to Rights) This pillar tackles systemic exclusion. Through a simple, multilingual questionnaire, it demystifies complex government and NGO schemes, showing users exactly what support they are eligible for and guiding them step-by-step through the application process.
Pillar 3: Dhan-Mitra (Financial Agency) This pillar builds long-term resilience. It's an AI-powered financial advisor that offers simple, actionable guidance on budgeting irregular income, saving, and avoiding predatory debt in the user's native language.
Pillar 4: Sehat-Sathi (Health Protection) This pillar acts as a protective shield against health crises. The AI health companion helps triage symptoms, connects users to low-cost telehealth services, and stores digital prescriptions, preventing health issues from becoming financial catastrophes.
How we built it
We architected JyotiSetu with a modular approach, assigning specific technologies to power each pillar, all unified within a single cross-platform application.
For Pillar 1 (Annapurna): We used the Google Maps API for geolocation services, a MongoDB database for storing and querying locations, and the Twilio API to power the critical SMS alert gateway.
For Pillar 2 (Adhikar-Khoj): We built a structured SQL database to house the complex rules and data for government schemes, with a Node.js/Express backend to run the eligibility logic.
For Pillar 3 & 4 (AI Companions): We leveraged Google's Dialogflow for its powerful Natural Language Processing (NLP) to create our multilingual chatbots. The health companion's image analysis feature uses a lightweight, on-device TensorFlow Lite model for initial triage.
The Core Platform: The entire user experience is delivered through a Next.js application, ensuring it runs smoothly on both Android and iOS from a single codebase.
Challenges we ran into
Our biggest challenges were directly tied to making our pillars effective and trustworthy.
Pillar 1 Challenge (Data Veracity): How could we ensure the food distribution data was reliable? We solved this by developing a community verification system, where listings are confirmed by trusted NGO partners or multiple users, building a foundation of trust.
Pillar 3 & 4 Challenge (User Trust): How do you convince someone to share sensitive financial or health information? We addressed this by designing the app to offer value upfront. Users can anonymously access the food map (Pillar 1), building familiarity and trust before engaging with the more personal AI pillars.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The Success of the Pillar Integration: Our proudest accomplishment is seeing how the four pillars work together. A user might come for food (Pillar 1) but stay to discover a scholarship for their child (Pillar 2) and learn how to save money (Pillar 3). This integrated journey is where true empowerment happens.
Launching the SMS Service: We are incredibly proud of the SMS alert system for Pillar 1. It represents our commitment to digital inclusivity and ensures that our most critical service reaches those who need it most, regardless of their technology.
Building a Truly Empathetic AI: The feedback on our "Dhan-Mitra" and "Sehat-Sathi" chatbots has been overwhelmingly positive. We succeeded in creating AI that feels less like a machine and more like a patient, supportive guide.
What we learned
This project taught us that a successful social impact tool must be built on Dignity, Trust, and Accessibility. The pillar-based structure allowed us to focus on these principles, learning that the best technology doesn't just provide answers; it gives people the power to find their own.
What's next for JyotiSetu - Illuminating Paths Forward.
Our vision is to expand upon our successful four-pillar foundation.
Introducing a Fifth Pillar: "Kushal-Setu" (The Skills Bridge). We plan to add a new pillar focused on hyper-local job matching and micro-skilling opportunities, completing the user's journey from stability to sustainable income.
Deepening Community Integration: We will empower users to become "Community Verifiers" and mentors, creating a self-sustaining ecosystem of support.
Strategic Expansion: We aim to partner with local governments and NGOs to roll out JyotiSetu in new regions, using our modular design to quickly adapt the platform to local schemes and languages.
