Inspiration

This project was inspired by the life and legacy of Justin Dart Jr., a major leader in the disability rights movement in the United States. When I first learned about his story, I was impressed by how his personal experience with polio eventually became connected to a much larger civil rights movement.

I wanted to show that disability rights are not only about medical support or individual struggles. They are also about access, dignity, equality, and law. Justin Dart Jr. helped change the way society understood disability, especially through his advocacy for the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Instead of making a normal essay or slideshow, I wanted to build an interactive timeline that lets viewers move through his life like a visual story.

What it does

Justin Dart Jr. — An Interactive Civil Rights Timeline is a web-based historical timeline about Justin Dart Jr.’s life, advocacy, and impact.

The project takes users through important moments in his life, including:

  • His childhood and early life
  • His experience with polio
  • His education and early activism
  • His work in business
  • His marriage to Yoshiko Dart
  • His disability rights advocacy in Texas
  • His role in national disability policy
  • The signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act
  • His Presidential Medal of Freedom
  • His legacy after his death

The website uses animated scenes, scroll-based navigation, visual effects, background music, and historical text to make the story more engaging.

How I built it

I built the project as a static website using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

The HTML file contains the structure of the timeline and the historical content. CSS is used to create the full-screen layouts, animations, scene transitions, typography, and visual design. JavaScript controls the interactive parts of the website, including navigation, animation timing, scroll behavior, music controls, and canvas-based particle effects.

I also used images, maps, and visual references to make each historical scene feel different. Some scenes are designed like a memory, some feel like a ceremony, and others use symbolic visuals to represent Dart’s advocacy and legacy.

Challenges I faced

One of the biggest challenges was turning historical information into visual storytelling. I had to decide which parts of Justin Dart Jr.’s life were most important and how to represent them clearly without making the website feel too crowded.

Another challenge was animation timing. I wanted the scenes to feel smooth, but not too slow or distracting. It took a lot of testing to make the transitions, text effects, and visual elements work together.

I also had to balance historical accuracy with creative design. Some visuals are symbolic rather than exact recreations, so I had to make sure the message still respected the real history.

A technical challenge was organizing the JavaScript and CSS so that the timeline scenes could work together smoothly. Since the project has many different sections, animations, and interactive effects, keeping everything clean and readable was important.

What I learned

Through this project, I learned more about both web development and disability rights history.

On the technical side, I improved my skills in:

HTML structure; CSS animation; JavaScript event handling

On the historical side, I learned how important Justin Dart Jr. was to the disability rights movement. I also learned that laws like the Americans with Disabilities Act did not happen suddenly. They were the result of years of organizing, advocacy, public service, and personal courage.

What's next

In the future, I would like to improve the project by adding more accessibility features, such as better keyboard navigation, captions for audio, and improved screen reader support.

I would also like to add more primary sources, historical photographs, and maybe a mobile-optimized version with smoother touch interactions. Another possible improvement is adding a section comparing Justin Dart Jr.’s work with other civil rights movements to show how disability rights are part of a broader fight for equality.
