Inspiration

The legal system, for many, is a daunting, expensive, and often inaccessible labyrinth. We were deeply inspired by the pervasive gap between complex legal processes and the everyday person seeking justice. On the other side, legal professionals grapple with time-consuming tasks and the constant pressure to deliver excellence efficiently. Our inspiration stemmed from a desire to bridge these divides, leveraging the transformative power of AI to make legal support understandable and affordable for individuals, while simultaneously revolutionizing the efficiency and effectiveness of legal practice for professionals. We envisioned a world where access to justice isn't a privilege, but a fundamental right supported by intelligent technology.

What it does

Justicia is a comprehensive, dual-sided platform that serves as both an intelligent AI legal assistant for individuals and an AI-powered legal command center for professionals.

For individuals, Justicia offers:

  • AI Legal Chat: A sophisticated chatbot providing jurisdiction-aware legal insights, answering complex questions, and guiding users through scenarios with clear, cited information.
  • AI-Powered Defense & Strategy Crafter: Helps self-represented individuals build robust legal arguments, analyze uploaded documents, and draft common legal documents.
  • Real-Time AI Legal Assistant for Proceedings: A groundbreaking feature that transcribes live court dialogue, spots key issues, and suggests "next best questions" discreetly in real-time (where permitted).
  • AI Legal Document Generator: Enables users to generate and customize various legal documents with AI assistance.
  • Justicia Legal Marketplace: A transparent platform connecting individuals with qualified lawyers who can bid on their cases.

For legal professionals, Justicia provides:

  • Intelligent Case Analysis: AI-driven document review, summarization, issue spotting, strategic blueprint generation with cited authority, and predictive analytics.
  • Advanced Legal Drafting: Dynamic generation of legal documents, contextual auto-completion, and compliance checking.
  • Client Management: Tools for active contracts, communications, and client analytics.
  • Marketplace Participation: Browse and bid on available cases, manage proposals, and maintain a professional profile.
  • Exhibit Management: A dedicated system for organizing, tagging, and cross-referencing case exhibits.

How we built it

We built Justicia with a robust, scalable, and secure technology stack designed for high performance and reliability.

The frontend was developed using React JS, providing a highly interactive, responsive, and component-based user interface that ensures a smooth and modern user experience across various devices.

For the backend and database, we leveraged Supabase, a powerful Backend-as-a-Service solution. Supabase provides a PostgreSQL Database for structured legal data, user profiles, case information, and marketplace listings. It seamlessly handles secure user Authentication, enables Realtime Subscriptions for features like live chat and marketplace updates, and crucially ensures granular data privacy with Row Level Security (RLS). Supabase also manages Storage for all uploaded legal documents and media.

The core of our intelligent functionalities is powered by advanced AI Models. We primarily utilized OpenRouter's Deepseek V3 Model for its exceptional capabilities in powering the legal AI expertise, document analysis, defense crafting, and sophisticated drafting tools, benefiting from its large context window. While conceptual for the hackathon, Tavus Conversational Agent is intended to drive the highly interactive virtual judge/opposing counsel simulations and the real-time in-court assistant, aiming for realistic vocal and conversational interactions.

Throughout the development, security was paramount. We implemented end-to-end encryption for all data in transit and at rest, alongside Supabase RLS for granular access control and adherence to OWASP Top 10 Protections.

Challenges we ran into

One of our primary challenges was prompt engineering for the AI models. Crafting prompts that consistently elicited accurate, nuanced, and jurisdiction-aware legal responses from OpenRouter's Deepseek model required extensive iteration and fine-tuning. Ensuring the AI's output was not only correct but also presented in "layered information delivery" (simple language first, then official citations) was particularly complex.

Another significant challenge was designing the user experience for complex legal workflows. Translating intricate legal processes into intuitive, step-by-step interfaces for both individuals and lawyers, especially for features like the Interactive Case Brief Builder and Exhibit Management, demanded careful UX/UI planning to avoid overwhelming users while capturing all necessary information.

Finally, integrating the various components – real-time features, document uploads, AI processing, and database interactions – while maintaining optimal performance and robust security within the hackathon timeframe, presented a demanding technical challenge.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are incredibly proud of successfully building a comprehensive, dual-sided platform that truly caters to both individuals and legal professionals within the hackathon's constraints. The seamless integration of advanced AI capabilities, such as the AI Legal Chat with jurisdiction-aware responses and the AI-Powered Defense & Strategy Crafter, represents a significant technical accomplishment.

We are particularly proud of the conceptualization and initial groundwork for the Real-Time AI Legal Assistant for Proceedings, which, if fully realized, would be a groundbreaking assistive technology in courtrooms. Our rigorous focus on ethical AI integration with clear disclaimers and robust security measures (Supabase RLS) in such a sensitive domain is also a major point of pride. Delivering a functional prototype that clearly demonstrates our vision for democratizing legal access and revolutionizing legal practice in a short timeframe is a testament to our team's dedication and skill.

What we learned

Building Justicia taught us invaluable lessons about the intersection of AI, legal tech, and user experience. We deepened our understanding of advanced prompt engineering techniques and the critical importance of context windows in achieving precise AI outputs for complex domains like law. We also gained significant insights into designing intuitive interfaces for highly specialized workflows, realizing that simplification without sacrificing essential functionality is key. Furthermore, the development reinforced the absolute necessity of robust security and clear ethical guidelines when building platforms that handle sensitive personal and legal information. We learned how to rapidly prototype sophisticated features by leveraging powerful BaaS solutions like Supabase, significantly accelerating our development process.

What's next for Justicia

Our long-term vision for Justicia is ambitious and impactful. We plan to:

  • Fully develop and integrate the Virtual Courtroom Simulation & Coaching with Tavus AI, providing invaluable practice and real-time guidance for individuals.
  • Explore Blockchain Integration for immutable document timestamps and verifiable legal records, enhancing trust and security.
  • Forge Global Legal Aid Partnerships to offer pro-bono services and further expand access to justice.
  • Work towards Integration with Court E-filing Systems (jurisdiction permitting) to streamline the submission of AI-generated and lawyer-reviewed documents.
  • Develop Specialized Legal Modules for niche areas like patent law or environmental regulations.
  • Implement Continuous Learning AI with feedback loops from legal professionals to constantly improve AI accuracy and strategic suggestions.
  • Expand with Multi-language Support to reach a global audience.
  • Curate a comprehensive Educational Content Hub to further empower users with legal knowledge. Ultimately, Justicia aims to become the definitive platform for legal assistance and professional legal practice worldwide, truly empowering justice for all.
