JusticeBot

Inspiration

The inspiration came from Hiil Justice in need in Uganda research report which states that : Nearly two thirds (65%) of Ugandans seek information and advice when faced with a justice problem.Also during the legal hackathon kampala, 70% of people we surveyed have difficulties or pay to much to access because they don't understand well legal procedures and they said having a platform that share these for free will be a great help.

JusticeBot is a chatbot that connects people with legal service providers and provides them legal procedures information in a well simplified version and in some commonly used language(English, French, Luganda, Teso...). JusticeBot connects based on the language and expertise needed for the case.

JusticeBot is Messenger Chatbot which is built using Node.js and PHP. The information are stored using Mysql Database. The Node.js handles everything that concerns the chatbot and the PHP handles the Web part which helps lawyers and advocates to work on issues submitted.

The challenge we are facing is getting people with passion and vision for helping community to understand law and to get access justice to join the team. We need more people on the team but we don't hire one because of talent only but belief concerning justice. Another challenge that we faced was reaching out to legal service providers for market research and idea validation, they are busy and you can't get them in one place the transport is costly and it really needed endurance. On technology side, learning about Artificial Intelligence(NLP) was another that we face and we still have a lot to understand and apply.

Everyone needs justice but the laws explaining how to get it are complex to be understood easily. Being an agent who makes law easy to understand 24/7 and makes access to justice easier is one of the best thing to do in life. We are really dedicated to and proud of the work we are doing. People are giving great feebacks to show what we are doing is of great help knowing that gives us courage.

We have learn a lot concerning justice problems that is pressing our community; Land Dispute Issues, Family Issues which has made us to come up with this project. We also know now different legal procedures and legal institutions to solve these problems. Technically we have also learnt a lot about Natural Language Processing a field that we didn't know at first.

We are going live in October, our next step is partnering with legal service providers who will subscribe on the platform and their association which we have started and to launch in October. We are finalist of the Innovating Justice Challenge 2018 organized by HiiL Justice Accelerator so we are preparing ourselves to join the accelerator too.
