Inspiration
Growing up without clear guidance on my future career, I knew I wanted to be successful and understood there were different ways to get there, but I never really had someone to show me the ropes. I often felt lost, making mistakes and learning by trial.
I explored different career paths, from teaching, scriptwriting, and social media management to content writing, until finally, I returned, five years post-university graduation, to technology.
This experience fueled my passion to create the JLH app—a resource for young girls, especially those from underserved communities, to have clear, guided pathways and encouragement from role models they can relate to. I want to give them the direction and confidence I once sought, creating a tool that helps them dream boldly and step forward with clarity.
What it does
The JLH app empowers young girls by presenting personalized career pathways aligned with their interests. It enables each girl to visualize a successful version of herself, outlining the steps to reach that future.
For evolving capabilities, JLH will provide interactive recommendations, tailored educational resources, and feature inspiring success stories. Helping young girls make informed decisions and find encouragement on their journey.
How we built it
We developed JLH using Flutter for a seamless, cross-platform experience, integrating Google AI for personalized career recommendations. With Firebase as our backend and Google Cloud for image processing, these technologies allowed us to deliver a dynamic, engaging platform that meets each user where they are.
Challenges we ran into
Creating a solution that could cater to diverse users with unique dreams and pathways was challenging. Some advanced features, such as tailored AI recommendations and image transformations, require paid access, which we had to suspend for now to continue developing the app’s core functionality.
Integrating these complex tools in a cohesive, user-friendly way was no small feat, and still requires a professional user experience designer, which is critical to achieving the app’s vision.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We’re proud of creating a solution that not only inspires but also provides actionable steps. Seeing the potential impact of the JLH app on young girls, especially in Africa, has been a huge accomplishment.
What we learned
This project gave us invaluable exposure to Google’s suite of products, highlighting how powerful and versatile these tools can be. Google AI, in particular, showed us the potential of artificial intelligence to create personalized, impactful experiences. From the Prediction API to Firebase and Cloud Storage, we learned how these tools can seamlessly integrate, providing everything from backend support to real-time, secure data handling and advanced machine learning functionalities. The accessibility, scalability, and sheer functionality of Google’s ecosystem expanded our vision of what’s possible, which we would continue to build on.
What's next for Just Like Her (JLH) App
Looking ahead, we aim to expand JLH’s reach, refining our recommendation algorithms to offer even more tailored pathways and interactive progress tracking.
Ultimately, we envision JLH as a global platform where girls everywhere can see their dreams as achievable, with each step guided and supported, lighting the way toward a future they can believe in.
