Inspiration

The inspiration for JurisMind came from seeing how individuals and small business owners often struggle to understand complex legal documents. Contracts, rental agreements, and terms of service are written in dense legal jargon, creating an imbalance of knowledge between ordinary people and institutions. Many people unknowingly agree to unfavorable terms such as hidden fees, automatic renewals, or liability waivers. This problem motivated us to create a solution that makes legal information transparent, accessible, and empowering.

What it does

JurisMind is a generative AI-powered platform that simplifies and analyzes legal documents. Users can upload contracts, agreements, or policies, and the system provides:

  • Concise plain-language summaries
  • Clause-by-clause explanations
  • Highlighting of potentially risky terms
  • Interactive Q&A for clarifications
  • Personalized guidance on next steps
  • Lawyer matching for professional consultation when needed

The goal is to provide a trustworthy first line of understanding before users consult a lawyer.

How we built it

We built JurisMind by combining generative AI with an agent-based pipeline using IBM ADK. The workflow consists of:

  1. Document parsing using OCR and PDF tools to extract structured text.
  2. An AI summarizer that condenses lengthy contracts into clear overviews.
  3. A risk detection agent that identifies harmful or unusual clauses.
  4. An interactive Q&A chatbot that answers user queries in plain language.
  5. A recommendation layer that provides negotiation tips or connects users with lawyers. The backend was developed using Python (FastAPI/Flask), supported by a vector database for semantic search. The frontend was designed as a React-based dashboard with a conversational interface. All documents are handled securely with encryption and strict privacy protocols.

Challenges we ran into

  • Handling ambiguous legal jargon and ensuring explanations remain accurate but understandable.
  • Preventing users from mistaking AI-generated insights as formal legal advice.
  • Scaling the system to process long and complex contracts efficiently.
  • Designing a neutral, unbiased system that treats all parties fairly.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Building a pipeline that transforms complex legal text into clear, actionable insights.
  • Creating a user-friendly interface where legal understanding feels accessible.
  • Ensuring security and privacy are embedded in the system from the ground up.
  • Demonstrating that AI can empower people in areas typically dominated by specialists.

What we learned

Through this project, we learned how to combine generative AI with agent-based orchestration. We explored natural language processing techniques for summarization, risk detection, and translation into plain English. We also gained experience in secure handling of sensitive data and designing AI outputs with appropriate disclaimers. One important takeaway was how to mathematically reason about clause classification, for example:

[ P(\text{Risky Clause}) = \frac{\text{Occurrences of Risk Pattern}}{\text{Total Clauses}} ]

This helped us design a more systematic approach to risk identification.

What's next for JurisMind

We plan to expand JurisMind by:

  • Supporting multiple languages for broader accessibility.
  • Adding integration with more legal domains, such as employment contracts and loan documents.
  • Enhancing the lawyer marketplace with transparent ratings and scheduling features.
  • Developing mobile applications for easier access.
  • Continuously improving the AI models with domain-specific fine-tuning.

The long-term vision is to establish JurisMind as the most trusted AI-driven legal assistant, reducing barriers to legal literacy and promoting fairness for all.
