My bad habits have a funny way of inspiring my projects (lol). Habits, as James Clear explains in Atomic Habits, are small actions that can be shaped through tiny, consistent changes — leading to remarkable results. I’ve always believed in tracking and recording my habits, because data is power. When you see your progress — or your setbacks — laid out in front of you, it doesn’t just inform you; it triggers an emotional response. Sometimes it’s a sense of pride, other times it’s a sting of guilt. And that’s exactly where psychology steps in — these emotions become powerful motivators for change. One habit I’ve grown particularly tired of battling is my junk food consumption. So, I created the Junk Food Tracker — a tool that turns habit tracking into both a mirror and a motivator. Every record you log is either a badge of discipline or a reality check, helping you slowly rewire your choices and build a healthier pattern.
What it does
The Junk Food Tracker is a habit tracker with a twist — it turns your eating habits into a points-based game. Every healthy day earns you +10 points, while every junk food slip costs you –10 points. It’s not just about avoiding unhealthy food; it’s about actively rewarding good choices. Over time, your score becomes a reflection of your discipline — the higher it is, the healthier your habits. And to make it even more engaging, you can compete with friends. Compare scores at the end of the week, celebrate the healthiest eater, and turn everyday food choices into a friendly challenge. It’s simple psychology: we chase rewards and avoid penalties. The Junk Food Tracker taps into that instinct to help you break bad habits and build better ones.
What I learned
This project pushed me into new territory — and I loved it. I discovered that learning new tools and skills can actually be enjoyable when you see them come to life in something you’ve built. Diving into the details, working consistently, and constantly asking myself, “How will this help me as a user?” gave me a different kind of energy. It turned my daily routine into something meaningful, and gave me a reason to wake up every day with purpose.
