Inspiration

Most prospective students visit their potential universities' social media pages and ask questions about their university before submitting an application. Automation of this task can come in handy since at times it might take multiple messages and span a few hours to fully tell a potential student about their programs and guide them to submitting an application.

What it does

This chatbot tells potential students about the online university, the different types of degree programs, cost to attend, certificates offered, and requirements needed to apply.

How I built it

I used nodejs as my programming framework, wit.ai as my Natural Language Processing platform and the Facebook Graph API.

Challenges I ran into

The planning phase was the most challenging. Coming up with a potential list of what potential students might want to know and the responses that would satisfy them.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

Managing to create a fluid and intelligent chatbot. Also using the Facebook API was a thrill as it gave me a behind the scenes look at how our messages are delivered. Furthermore, managing to push through and complete the project despite a hectic work schedule.

What I learned

This was my first chatbot ever and therefore realising that it is a just a server receiving and responding to requests was fascinating. It made it seem less mysterious. Furthermore, learning how to use Facebook Graph API to get and post data was great.

What's next for Julia - A University Chatbot

I will keep on experimenting with it.
