Jugaad AI — The Great Indian Problem-Solving Machine

💡 Inspiration

India runs on jugaad.

That brilliant, scrappy, "kuch bhi kar ke nikaal lo" approach to life that every Indian instinctively understands. But not everyone has a wise dadi, a resourceful neighbour, or a clever friend on speed dial when problems hit.

We looked at the hackathon's "Surprise Us!" category and asked ourselves — what's the one thing every Indian does naturally but no app has ever truly captured?

The answer was obvious. We built Jugaad AI.

🔧 What We Built

Jugaad AI is an AI-powered problem-solving machine designed specifically for the Indian context. Users describe their real-life problems in Hinglish — and the app generates a classified "Jugaad Intelligence Bureau Dossier" with three escalating tiers of solutions:

Tier Name Philosophy
🟢 Zero Budget Jugaad Free. Works right now.
🟡 ₹100 Jugaad Small spend, big results.
🔴 Nuclear Option Last resort. Use with caution.

Every dossier includes a Risk Assessment and closes with a relevant Indian proverb — because wisdom is also a jugaad.

Problem categories covered:

  • 🏠 Hostel Life
  • 🏛 College Admin
  • 💸 Money Problems
  • 👨‍👩‍👧 Family Pressure
  • 💼 Career & Jobs
  • 🎲 Surprise Me

🏆 The Hall of Jugaads

Our most proud feature — a community archive where solved dossiers are published publicly, voted on, and browsed by category. Real problems. Real solutions. Crowdsourced Indian wisdom.

Top solution currently sits at 204 votes and counting.

🛠 How We Built It

We built Jugaad AI entirely on MeDo — designing the full product experience from scratch:

  • Product Design — The retro government-bureau aesthetic, the three-tier solution architecture, the Hinglish-first UX, and the dossier output format were all conceptualised and designed by our team
  • AI Layer — Powered by Gemini 2.5 Flash, carefully prompted to think in the jugaad mindset — practical, culturally rooted, zero Western assumptions
  • Community Layer — Hall of Jugaads with public/private dossiers, voting system, category filters, and shareable links
  • Platform — MeDo handled full-stack scaffolding, database, routing, and deployment — letting us focus entirely on the product experience

🚧 Challenges We Faced

1. Making AI think like an Indian Getting the AI to generate solutions that are genuinely practical within Indian constraints — not suggesting "hire a consultant" when someone has ₹0 — required careful, iterative prompt engineering.

2. The three-tier architecture Designing solutions that naturally escalate from free → cheap → nuclear, without overlap or generic advice, was harder than it sounds. Each tier needed a distinct personality and risk profile.

3. The aesthetic Building a retro government-bureau visual identity that felt authentically desi — not just brown colours — required deliberate design decisions at every level, from typography to the "TOP SECRET" stamps on dossiers.

4. Community trust Designing the Hall of Jugaads so that publicly shared dossiers feel useful and not embarrassing for the original poster required careful thinking around anonymity and framing.

📚 What We Learned

  • Great AI products are 10% AI and 90% product thinking — the jugaad mindset had to be designed, not just prompted
  • Cultural specificity is a feature, not a limitation — the more Indian we made it, the more resonant it became
  • Community layers transform a tool into a platform — the Hall of Jugaads made Jugaad AI feel alive
  • MeDo significantly compressed our development timeline, letting us ship a full-featured product within the hackathon window

🌍 Impact

"Every problem has a jugaad. You just haven't found it yet."

Jugaad AI was built for the 1.4 billion people who solve impossible problems every single day with whatever they have. No consulting fees. No privilege required. Just practical wisdom — dispensed at the speed of thought.
