Inspiration
with current safety issues on/around Yorku campus, there needs to be a system that can respond appropriately, quickly in order to catch the suspect.
What it does
optimizes security patrol in the hopes the response time in emergencies will be lower. this is done by a location tracking ping that can be activated by the user and will send gps location to the closest security personal. the closest security personal will be calculated based on the gps tracking that will be mandatory when on the shift. this will be done via the security app.
How we built it
we used figma to visualize. however, the idea is that we will use Dijkstra Algorthim in order to find shortest distances between security personal and emergency locations. as well as googles map api for its gps system with the overlap of York Universities Campus map.
Challenges we ran into
- York U security personal do not have any geolocation trackers on them when they are patrolling, so it is not possible to find the closest security personal instantly. 2. how can we optimize the area of coverage to be evenly spread across campus. the area of coverage depends on how many security personal are patrolling on that night. 3. we were not able to retrieve information such as: a. average units of patrol on the campus streets, and b. the average response time from the moment a call is made to the arrival of security personal on location. tried called York U campus security, they did not have this info.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
proud that we were able to create a system that is highly efficient and effective in theory. A system that if implemented in the state it was theorized in, rather then the state that we were able to complete in our short time at this hackathon, will change the current model in a way that will increase the rate in which suspects can be apprehends or deterred.

we learned about different algorithmic models, how to access google map's api, and how York U security personal are not tracked when they patrol the campus
What's next for Optimal Security @ Yorku
If this proposal is seen by YorkU and accepted, the objective would be to develop the idea further, integrate it into the current Yorku Safety App, update the servers to allow the algorithm to function on its own with the data collected from emergency ping and security personal location.
