A pervading sense of community has been lost in our modern, tech-filled, online lives.
We all feel it.
More time online. Less time interacting.
On top of a techno-cultural shift, families often have two earners in the household to help maintain some sense of financial stability. But try as we might, sometimes its just not enough and children are often deprived of the the the things that make a childhood a childhood -- toys!
There is an old saying, "It takes a village to raise a child." We still believe this to be true and want revive that long-lost feeling of community through our site where people help each other willingly not because it serves their own purposes, but servers the greater good.
JoyToys is an online web application made to create a community connecting underprivileged children with generous anonymous donors. Donors can fulfill random children's Amazon wish list (registered by the family).
Our hope when we create this website is to foster a sense of community within your network and at the same time provide the tools that children need for the sake of their emotional growth, mental development and social well-being.
Anonymous donors are presented with a randomly selected with a recipients wish list. No PII (personally identifiable information) is shared between either parties during this process!
Our biggest challenges were to connect gift receivers and donors together without sharing any personally identifiable information. To achieve this, we decided utilizing Amazon's wishlist feature would be best. Personal location data like someones address is stored with Amazon, and we only collect a name and a way to reach the gift receivers. While we were expecting Amazon to have an API for their wishlist feature, none existed. JoyToys developers instead found a work around to solve this issue (see 'wishlist.php'). JoyToys scrapes a public Amazon wishlist, parses the data, and displays it to willing donors without releasing any personal information.
