Inspiration
Too much scrolling: We spend time online but can finish feeling distracted or drained. Joy is personal: What lifts one person up may not work for someone else. Hard to start: People often want to feel better but don't know what small action to try.
What it does
Check in with your mood: Users complete a quick, optional daily feeling check (such as 😊 Good, 😐 Okay, 😔 Low, or "I feel a bit stressed"). Set a time limit: Users choose their available time—2, 5, or 15 minutes. Get a small activity suggestion: JoyTech recommends a real-world moment, such as "Take a 5-minute walk, notice 3 things you like, and save one memory" or "Play one favorite song". Reflect on how it felt: Users log quick feedback on the activity (such as "That helped a little").
How we built it
Frontend: Built with React / HTML-CSS-JS to handle the mood check-in, activity cards, and journal UI.
Backend: Powered by Firebase / a simple REST API to store optional preferences and saved activities.
Recommendation Engine: Uses rules-based matching (Mood + time + user choice → activity) to suggest personalized ideas
Challenges we ran into
Avoiding screen-time traps: Our biggest design challenge was making sure the app encourages real-world moments rather than keeping users scrolling longer. We had to intentionally avoid guilt-based streaks, addictive loops, and public mood comparisons.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Enforcing responsible design guardrails: no mental-health diagnosis or treatment claims, no public mood scores, no streak anxiety, and clear user control over saved data.
What we learned
MVP Principle: A working user journey beats a long feature list. Action over measurement: The goal isn't to measure happiness perfectly—it's to make the next positive step easier. Respecting time and privacy: Technology should help us live better, not just scroll longer, and users should choose to return rather than feel forced to.
What's next for JOYTECH
Helping users find useful activities even faster and expanding the library of sample activities for 2, 5, and 15-minute moments. Improving personalized matching as users save more activities that feel personal and share positive feedback after trying suggestions. Continuing to strengthen our consent-first privacy controls while keeping the experience lightweight and pressure-free.
