Inspiration
“JOY • REGRET • HOPE” was inspired by the emotional cycles we all experience — the happiness we treasure, the mistakes we regret, and the small spark of hope that helps us rise again. The film reflects how memories shape us, even when they are painful, and how we fight to hold onto the ones that matter most.
What it does
This AI short film transforms three core emotions into cinematic storytelling:
- JOY — warm, nostalgic moments filled with love
- REGRET — the emotional collapse after heartbreak and loss
- HOPE — the quiet courage that brings light back into the darkness
The film invites viewers to feel each emotional transition through visuals, pacing, and music.
How we built it
The entire film was crafted using a focused AI-driven workflow:
- Gemini / VEO 3 — cinematic shots, emotional lighting, seamless transitions
- CapCut — editing, pacing, montage, color balancing
- Suno AI — original emotional soundtrack composed for the three chapters
- Adobe Photoshop — used only for creating the cover artwork
Every scene was carefully engineered through prompt iteration to maintain character consistency, color tone, and emotional continuity.
Challenges we ran into
One of the biggest challenges was that Gemini / VEO 3 had difficulty rendering children consistently and safely. To overcome this, the scenes involving the child were creatively shown through a screen or monitor inside the film. This approach not only solved the technical limitation, but also added an emotional layer to the storytelling — as if the father was looking back at a memory he could not touch.
Other challenges included:
- Maintaining consistent character identity across emotional states
- Making the JOY → REGRET → HOPE transitions feel natural
- Matching Suno AI’s soundtrack with the visual pacing
- Achieving a cinematic look without advanced post-production tools
Despite these limitations, each challenge pushed the creative direction to be more intentional and expressive.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Successfully conveyed three complex emotions through pure visual storytelling
- Achieved strong character consistency without model training
- Created an original soundtrack that enhances the emotional tone
- Built the entire film as a solo creator through multiple AI tools
- Delivered a universal emotional story with no dialogue required
What we learned
This project taught us:
- How to guide AI tools toward emotional authenticity
- How music, pacing, and lighting influence the viewer’s emotional journey
- How to balance symbolism with narrative clarity
- That emotion can lead the technology, not the other way around
What's next for JOY • REGRET • HOPE
We plan to:
- Produce a longer Director’s Cut
- Create a follow-up short film exploring healing and acceptance
- Release behind-the-scenes prompts and workflow breakdown
- Add multi-language subtitles for international screenings
- Expand this project into an emotional trilogy
