Inspiration

I was lucky to get early access to OpenAI playground in 2020. Then for the next few years, as I was using AI for myself daily, I kept thinking about ways to build something that used AI to help others. That's what led me to make Journoo.

The original idea for Journoo was recorded in my paper journal. I began keeping a journal in 2019 and it’s allowed me to see how attention is our most valuable asset. Journaling helps me focus my attention and is an essential tool supporting continuous learning and transformation.

It's designed to help you focus, follow through, and build the life you want. It transforms journaling from a simple act of recording into a dynamic conversation with yourself.

How we built it

We chose Flutter early because our roadmap calls for truly native apps across mobile, desktop, and watch. The app is built feature-first with clean architecture - around 24 self-contained feature modules (journaling, insights, goals, habits, relationship tracking, voice mode), each split into data/domain/presentation layers, wired together with Riverpod 3 and code generation.

The backend runs entirely on the edge: a TypeScript API on Cloudflare Workers backed by serverless Postgres, organized as focused services behind a lean routing layer. Journal entries are encrypted at rest, media lives in object storage, and semantic search over your own history is powered by vector embeddings.

On the AI side, we integrate multiple providers and models and route each job to whichever fits best, with full observability over every prompt so we can iterate using real traces. Prompts are operator-tuned server-side rather than hardcoded, letting us improve the experience without shipping app updates. Prompt evaluation always happens in an isolated environment against dev data only - user data on stg and prod is encrypted and cannot be read, so no experiment ever touches real journals. Voice journaling combines on-device speech-to-text with our own recording and playback pipeline, plus natural AI voice replies.

Privacy runs through the whole product: encryption at rest, biometric lock, secure on-device storage, screenshot protection, and app attestation so only genuine builds can talk to our API.

We ship through CI/CD - over-the-air updates that let us patch Dart code within hours instead of waiting on store review. Four isolated environments (local, dev, stage, prod) keep experiments away from user data.
