Inspiration
Our teams inspiration comes from our own personal experiences with mental health issues, especially when it comes to social isolation. We understand how tough it can be to socialize when you are suffering from anxiety or depression. However, after going through our personal journeys we also realized how important those moments of spending time with other people was for us, especially when it was with the right persons who could understand what we were struggling with. We wanted to figure out how we could create a platform that would fight the issue of social isolation.
What it does
That's how we came up with the idea of Journey. A web application that will allow you to easily find events that you have an interest in, and with people who are going through their own journeys. Users can join events or host their own. Additionally, they can utilize their personal journey page as a way to look back at previous events attended and photos taken during their favorite moments. Sometimes a reminder of the fun experience you had is all you need to motivate you to try something again.
Build
As a team of developers, we divided into front end and back end engineers and were able to create a full stack application using React, Node, and Firebase. Of course, we got stuck many times along the way but we never gave up on our development.
What's next
What we are most excited about is that Journey has a lot of potential and future possibilities. We want to fully incorporate the idea of communicating with other members, reviewing events and hosts, leaving comments, and introducing a currency to spend on sponsored events that we can afford to give discounts on. We want our users to use the personal journey page to help monitor their progress and be able to reach out for help when they need it. We want to help them find their words to express their mood, perhaps even incorporating suggested phrases and sentences.
Removing the stigma, judgement, and stress from social events makes it easier to invite in that person who is struggling in isolation. And that's what Journey makes possible.
