Inspiration
We were inspired by our own experience journaling, and desire to make that process better through the power of technology. We wish to empower individuals who aspire to improve their mental health by providing them a space where they can focus on their feelings and take charge of their mental health journey.
What it does
Our web app asks a simple question: “How was your day?”. In a line or two the user can input their thoughts and save it to their online journal. These entries are saved in a table and displayed to the user. In the future, using Google’s Natural Language Processing API, these entries will be color coded based on the sentiment of each statement. Users will receive a weekly or monthly report so they can see how their mood changes over time. In addition, if a user enters text that indicates they are potentially a danger to themselves, they will be connected to a Resources page that contains information on where they can get help.
How we built it
Once we had our idea we divided the work amongst ourselves. We used HTML/CSS for the frontend, and Python/Flask for the back.
Challenges we ran into
As none of us are backend developers, it was a steep learning curve to try to implement the API and table of entries.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Getting a working product off the ground in less than 24 hours! Though there is more to implement, we are proud of what we have accomplished.
What we learned
This was the first time any of us used Flask, so that was a great skill to gain!
What's next for JournalMe
Fully fleshing out the Google Cloud Sentiment Analysis API to give users dynamic reports on their mental health.
