Inspiration

The inspiration was from personal experiences and experiences that my friends shared when battling their own problems. I realised that mental health was a taboo topic that the majority of the public tended to shy away from. Many of us don't actually know healthy ways to deal with our stresses and end up facing burnout. Hence I wanted to incorporate the element of journaling (which is a proven technique to redirect your focus and let go of your stresses) and an informational site into a single webpage.

What it does

  1. Homepage This page involves information about the different types of illnesses and the data etc. This is to allow those who have limited knowledge of what kind of illness they may be suffering from. This is purely for self-knowledge and not for self - diagnosis ->included a warning at the top

  2. Journalling Research has shown that journalling proves to be a good form of mental use and release and is a good form of self-care practice. This page provides a space where users can write out any experience which they may have been holding heavy in their hearts and release it. Due to time constraints, I was not able to include an entry history section where users can look through their past entries and see their progress.

  3. Tips This page provides 10 tips for users to relieve any mental stresses they face in their life. There is also a collection of helplines provided at the bottom in case anyone ever faces the situation of using them.

How we built it

I built the webpage using HTML and CSS.

Challenges we ran into

There were a couple of ideas that I had which I was not able to put in place due to my limited knowledge and time available. First I wanted to involve users to create an account and login in -> this is so that their journal entries can be stored in a proper database rather than the computer's local storage. This also allows users to access their previous entries and see how much they have grown or what they have to improve in the future. Secondly, I wanted to implement a feature called the mood tree. In this feature, users would have to tag an emoji to each of their journal entries and the emoji will be shown on the tree. This tree can display the frequency of a specific emotion they faced during the year (similar to a progress bar).

Accomplishments that we're proud of

This is my first hackathon and I am proud of creating a webpage in the span of a day. Considering the fact that I have only built one proper webpage in the past. There is definitely a lot more work to put in to fully develop the page.

What we learned

In the process, I learnt about storing data in local storage of the computer and more about databases.

What's next for Journal it out!

I would want to add a proper database so that I can accomplish the additional features that I have written above. I would also be learning more about CSS and Javascript to add in more design elements to the webpage.
