Inspiration

Managing records between healthcare appointments can mean keeping medication dates in one place, weight measurements in another, and questions for a provider somewhere else entirely.

Jotrea brings those records together for people taking prescribed GLP-1 medications.

The idea comes from a pharmacist’s perspective: people need a clear way to organize their own information without an app trying to make treatment decisions for them. Jotrea is a tracker and reminder—not a source of dosage recommendations or medical advice.

What it does

Jotrea helps users record prescribed medication doses, injection sites, weight, symptoms, and personal daily tracking goals in one place.

Essential tracking stays free:

  • Record prescribed injections or oral medication
  • Review dose history and injection-site records
  • Track weight and symptoms over time
  • Use reminders based on prescription details entered by the user

Jotrea Plus adds organization and reporting:

  • Medication Cabinet: Organize current and past medications, including companion medication records
  • Visit Notes: Prepare questions and record healthcare discussions, with automatic saving
  • Provider Visit Summary: Bring recorded medication, dose, weight, and symptom information together for an appointment
  • PDF and CSV exports: Share readable reports and spreadsheet-compatible records
  • Apple Health integration: Import supported weight records with permission

Jotrea Plus offers monthly and annual subscriptions at US prices of $4.99 and $39.99, with a 14-day introductory trial for eligible subscribers.

Core tracking records are stored on the device, and no account is required for core tracking.

How we built it

Jotrea uses React, TypeScript, and Vite for its interface, with Capacitor connecting the app to native iOS capabilities.

RevenueCat connects our custom subscription experience to Apple’s in-app purchases. We use its SDK to load subscription offerings, process purchases, restore purchases, and check the Jotrea Plus entitlement. The app uses that entitlement to unlock Plus features while keeping essential tracking free.

Reports are generated with jsPDF, while CSV exports provide spreadsheet-compatible records. Native integrations support reminders, file sharing, and Apple Health access.

Development combined pharmacy expertise, AI-assisted software development, and hands-on device testing.

Challenges we ran into

One important challenge was maintaining a clear boundary between recording prescribed information and providing medical guidance. We reviewed feature behavior and wording so Jotrea would help users organize their records without recommending treatments or dosages.

Subscriptions also required more than a successful purchase screen. We tested purchase restoration, trial expiration, and subscription status after reinstalling the app.

We encountered practical issues that only became clear during device testing, including PDF rendering in Apple Files and preserving Visit Notes when the app was interrupted. Fixing those details was essential to making the app dependable.

We also removed an early Advanced Trends feature from Version 1.1 because it did not add enough value beyond the free tracking experience.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Released Jotrea on the App Store and earned approval for Version 1.1 with Jotrea Plus subscriptions
  • Integrated RevenueCat into a working purchase and restoration flow
  • Kept essential tracking free while offering useful paid organization features
  • Created readable PDF and CSV exports for sharing personal records
  • Made Visit Notes resilient to interruptions
  • Preserved a consistent tracker-only approach throughout the product

What we learned

A subscription is not valuable simply because a feature is behind a paywall. The paid experience needs to solve an additional problem.

For Jotrea, that means helping users organize medication records and prepare for healthcare conversations—not charging for every basic tracking action.

We also learned that real-device testing matters. A purchase, report, or saved note can appear correct during development but behave differently when someone restores a subscription, opens a PDF in another app, or backgrounds the app while writing.

What's next for Jotrea

We plan to bring Jotrea to Google Play, including Android subscription support through RevenueCat.

We also want to improve reporting and record organization based on user feedback, while keeping essential tracking accessible and maintaining a clear boundary between personal recordkeeping and medical advice.
