Inspiration
Many who are required to work for extended periods of time become frustrated or angry, and we found that a simple relief source can be beneficial in the long run.
What it does
Joqe is a chrome extension made to generate jokes to provide a temporary relief source during times of stress.
How we built it
We began by investigating ways to print random jokes using javascript and found an API that worked perfectly for us. We decided on a colour palette and designed a logo, while beginning the html for the extension. Combining the graphic design with the code and polishing the functions of our application, we got our final product.
Challenges we ran into
After finishing the simple prototype much faster than anticipated, we decided to push ourselves to make it more advanced. We decided to implement filters to specify jokes a user may want to see, categorizing them by genres and allowing users to type words to filter through. This was, as expected, much of a challenge for us, especially as first time hackers. In the end, we finished with a beautiful layout with advanced settings and filters.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
This was both of our first hackathons, and we could not be more proud to have a functional final product! Overall, our chrome extension is something we will both walk away remembering and embracing as our first official hack.
What we learned
As a team, we decided to work together because we have contrasting skills that would be coherent together. This was probably the best decision on both of our parts, as we were able to successfully exchange our skills, as a graphic designer and a web developer.
What's next for joqe
In the future, we would ideally like to create our own API to have more control over the features and have a larger catalogue of jokes in contrast to our API's 342.
