Inspiration

We wanted to purchase items made from sustainable practices but lack the knowledge to do so. As such, we have decided to make a chrome extension that allows shopper to make sustainable choices

What it does

Our project is a chrome extension that provides sustainability scores of products users view on e-commerce platforms, ensuring that they are able to make well-informed and sustainable choices. What sets us apart from competitors is that we feature a detailed breakdown of our sustainability score, encompassing 6 major pillars; Biodiversity, Ecosystem Impact, Carbon Footprint, Pollution, Resource Depletion, Waste Generation Circularity and Water Usage. This provides total transparency as well as tangible factors with regards to what makes a product environmentally sustainable, along with justifying our overall sustainability score. Additionally, external links to credible, up-to-date websites are also cited as part of the reason for any ratings tabulated. Lastly, better and more sustainable alternatives, along with their estimated ratings will be recommended to users, reminding and encouraging users to play in their part in our global environmental protection efforts.

How we built it

We built it using javascript, css and html as the frontend, and flask as the backend. We used Gemini API as our API

Challenges we ran into

Since our team was made up of Year 1 and pre-university students, we were relatively new to this field and had limited experience with building browser extensions. As a result, we frequently referred to JavaScript and Flask documentation to support our development. One of the biggest challenges we faced was getting consistent and reliable JSON responses from the Gemini API, which required a lot of testing and fine-tuning.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Every product on all e-commerce websites are readable by our sustainability tracker, so users can select any product and be updated with the latest sustainability scores. Our minimalist yet organized design provides users with all the information they need while not distracting them from shopping at the e-commerce platforms. Our sustainability score takes into account many factors, allowing it to be as accurate as possible. We display the factors and the reasoning behind them, providing users with much needed transparency.

What we learned

We have learnt about the complexity of setting up such a project and how this could positively impact society as a whole as 68% of consumers want to make sustainable choices but lack accessible and reliable information, and we have found a solution for that.

What's next for Jooh

We could expand the coverage of Jooh to include home businesses, mobile applications and even other types of consumer products, such as food etc. For example, for food, we could provide a sustainability score based on the ingredients used to make the food, allowing users to consume environmentally sustainable food choices.
