Inspiration
The inspiration idea came from one of the pre-hackathon seminars that talked about the medical resources that are currently lacking within Indonesia. Moreover, we found out that there is a lack of health and mental awareness within the society, and the accessibility towards the person with medical backgrounds is low.
What it does
JomDOC is a web app that would allow users to browse for information on the top 4 diseases that rank the country’s highest death rate, spreading more awareness on detection and prevention. From there, users can choose to approach any of our medical helpers for either a free consultation before proceeding to book an appointment to visit the nearest hospital, or an emotional support that essentially is a talk to a befriender. This intermediate process aims to help increase the efficiency and quality of physicians in government hospitals. The consultation process would hopefully help reassure or filter out unnecessary visits to hospitals.
The volunteer section is basically a place where volunteer projects are published to acquire manpower that fulfill certain requirements to help out the operation of medicine in the country. Most of the projects published most welcome medical students that are still studying to participate in the real-world to get more experience and to reduce the tension in current medical resources. One of the most needed positions are the medical helpers that JomDOC visitors can talk to when they are in the “Talk To Us” section.
How we built it
The web application is built with the React.js framework, which comes along with multiple modules that are considered to be MVP. The database used, Firebase, is a noSQL database that includes a cloud storage located in SouthEast Asia.
Challenges we ran into
Challenges including the execution time and the user experience of the web applications. It is believed most of the users are still not familiar with the apps that have multiple navigation or buttons. Moreover, since this is the first time we get in touch with noSQL databases, we were trying our best to reduce the execution time including fetching data from the database as to assure that users with low internet speed could access our website before timeout.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
JomDOC has achieved the part of our expectation of having a centralized and easy-to-access web application. The smooth navigation throughout the website is what we are proud of as all of our user interfaces are made after a very careful consideration on the subject of HCI and Heuristics Interface Evaluation.
What we learned
We’ve learned that awareness within the society is the primary key for a society to improve their lifestyle. We also learned about the implementation of a project instead of assignment, as JomDOC is our first ever ‘real-world application’.
What's next for JomDOC
Indeed, JomDOC is not a fully functional web application at this point of time, but with the full implementation, this web app is having a bright future integrating into the government sector where it is recognized and deployed in the name of Indonesia’s Ministry of Health. When that happens, citizen can access to latest information of the most deadliest diseases and most importantly is to have a quick chat or talk with certified medical volunteers to help answer to doubts they have about their health condition.
