Inspiration

We were inspired by simple apps such as Forest that can aid people in managing their time better, and followed a similar aesthetic to create an app that replaces the current plain alarm downloaded on your phone.

What it does

It plays a cymbal noise with an animated monkey and requires a minute of focus and coordination from the user to get rid of the noise, whereby they will be awake and unable to snooze.

How we built it

We utilized Figma to prototype the UI and basic layout of the app and then used some HTML and CSS, but primarily JavaScript and React to code the project and allow for user interaction.

Challenges we ran into

We had limited knowledge on React and JavaScript, only having learnt the basics a few weeks ago. In order to create a user interaction we had to use React hooks, which were concepts we had only learnt a week before (as first years, we haven't even done any front-end work at uni).

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud that we came up with a fun and creative idea and actually stuck with it throughout a grueling and mentally draining day of coding. We had little experience with most of the languages used so we're proud that we were able to produce a functioning final product.

What we learned

We consolidated knowledge about DOM manipulation and changing HTML and CSS using JavaScript and gained more experience with React, especially using hooks and applying it together with HTML and CSS.

What's next for Jolly

We will be working on a project throughout the term with the same languages, and we might have to find a replacement third member for the next hackathon.
