Inspiration
When we go back and look at the number of tourists decreasing due to the Covid-19 pandemic that occurred in 2019, it becomes a concern to us. Thus it inspires us so that we come up with the idea of making this application. Even though the pandemic has been over, however, the impact is still felt today, where tourist numbers have not been able to return to their origin numbers, before the pandemic broke out. Therefore, we want to create an innovation that can help increase tourists, especially in Lanjukang Island as one of the tourist attractions that is worth visiting in the city of Makassar. Lanjukang has so many natural riches which of course will be very valuable if they can be used to attract tourists well.
What it does
The application we created is a mobile game application with a checkpoint concept. We put 3 checkpoints that tourists can visit as game posts. When they just enter the game, they will be given a clue that directs players to one of the existing checkpoints. The first checkpoint is located at the Lighthouse where above it, there will be an octopus character attached to throw balls. Players must win the balls according to the level chosen. The second checkpoint is located at the camping ground where at this checkpoint there will be a tree and a basket underneath it. Fruit will fall from the tree and the player's task is to catch the fruit by moving the basket using their smartphone. The final checkpoint will be located at the mosque on the island, where at the mosque, there will be a mascot hiding in the mosque area. Players need to find the character and press it to produce a trivia animation related to the mosque. So, through this game, they will also learn things about Lanjukang Island.
How we built it
We built this application with the Unity application for making the game. Meanwhile, to create assets, we use the Blender application. Apart from that, we also use several APIs to expedite the creation of our games, namely the ARCore API and the 3D Map Tiles API. We also use geospatial to lock the location of AR objects so that the game can only be played if it is on Lanjukang Island. However, due to several reasons, we have not been able to go to Lanjukang directly so we are only do the testing at our current location. Moreover, ARCore helps to bring AR objects to real life through our smartphones.
Challenges we ran into
The challenge we face is related to the creation where occlusion cannot yet be implemented in our game. Additionally, we know the competition is a bit slow so we don't have enough time to complete this application.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The achievement we have from making this application is that we succeeded in making a game for the first checkpoint even though it is not completely perfect.
What we learned
What we learned was how to make a game using the Unity application in C# because Unity is the first application we have used to make a game. Additionally, we also learned how to create assets and animations in Blender. Then, we also learned how to use the API from Google Cloud.
What's next for Jokka Jokka AR: Lanjukang Edition
In the future we will expand the area of the game, hence exposing our game application to more people. For example, by expanding the game area to the entire Makassar and adding a concept of egg hunt into the game and there will be compelling prizes if they successfully complete all the existing challenges. There will also be more edition of the game, for example "Jokka Jokka AR: Panlos Edition"
