Inspiration

Inspired by the theme of safety and security. The theme was safety and security. Our interpretation and project with this theme was to make a fall detecting band for elderly people, in the event that they fall and are unable to call for help.

What it does

It contacts and alerts anybody everybody contact list once our fall detector module detects a fall. It detects the fall by gathering the acceleration of the module (via the MPU6050) and noticing sudden spikes in acceleration followed by no movement. Once this fall is detected, our ESP32 notifies our app through bluetooth on a connected device; The app will then automatically send a notification to the phone and send an alert email to everybody on the contact list.

How we built it

We wired together a circuit consisting of an MPU6050 and an ESP32 to help with detecting violent changes in acceleration. The tool is nested within a 3D printed case. Our app is developed with flutter, with a firebase backend to store all the data for the app. We then use emailjs to automatically email contacts.

Challenges we ran into

We had trouble finding the time to work on the project, as we all were very busy this quarter. We also had difficulty making the fall detection as accurate as possible, having minimal false positives and always alerting in the event of a fall.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud of both our module and our app. We are satisfied with our presentation of our module, with a clean and minimalist design for the casing. We are also happy with our app, as it fully works properly and also follows the minimalist design.

What we learned

We learned how to use CAD to design more sophisticated and complex shape forms. We also learned how to use the MPU6050 alongside flutter and the associated services.

What's next for John's Fall Detector

Trying to integrate the use of AI and large data pools to assist in improving the accuracy of our fall detection. We would also like to improve our module, iterating on the design so it can be wearable without being too large or heavy.
