Inspiration
We’ve all faced it—that sudden, unforgiving muscle cramp after an intense workout, a long day of activity, or even just everyday movement. The problem? There’s no device on the market that effectively detects, classifies, and treats localized muscle pain in real time. We wanted to change that—to build something that not only understands pain but actively works to eliminate it, giving people the relief they need to move freely and recover faster.
What it does
Joe’s Muscle Pain Reliever is a smart, AI-powered pain relief system that detects muscle stress using: ✅ EMG signals to assess muscle tension and fatigue ✅ Heart rate variability to gauge biological stress levels ✅ Microtremor analysis to detect involuntary muscle vibrations
Once detected, the system classifies the pain into three levels—mild, moderate, and severe—and then delivers an optimal, personalized treatment using a combination of: 💡 Vibrational therapy to increase blood flow and muscle relaxation ⚡ TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) therapy to block pain signals and enhance recovery The result? A seamless, non-invasive solution that helps muscles heal faster and more effectively.
How we built it
We combined hardware, software, and neuroengineering to bring this system to life: 🔹 Hardware Components: Arduino microcontrollers, OpenBCI Ganglion boards, EMG sensors, vibration motors, and TENS units 🔹 Software Development: OpenBCI GUIs for real-time signal processing, Arduino IDE for embedded programming, and Python-based data analysis for pain classification 🔹 Machine Learning Integration: Custom-built pain classification models trained on biosignals to ensure accurate pain detection and response
Challenges we ran into
🚧 Code Compiling Issues – Integrating multiple biosignal inputs into a unified system required extensive debugging 🚧 Design Iterations – Optimizing the physical setup for maximum effectiveness and user comfort 🚧 EMG Signal Integration – Ensuring accurate, real-time data processing within the Arduino interactive environment
