Inspiration

There are many jobs in this world that have stereotypes about them resulting in people overlooking these jobs. For example, a firefighter was thought of as someone who just uses water to extinguish fire; doctor on the other hand was a white-clothed cruel person that injects and gives you medicine; teachers are someone who always strictly stands in front of the whiteboard and teaches obscure knowledge. These ideas are why JobQuestor was born, which is a platform that allows students to discover more possible career paths and get insights into their daily life. It is also for people who are curious and want to discover other people's lives. FYI: Even though a doctor’s job might not be overlooked by society, a firefighter’s and teacher’s is even though they all save lives.

What it does

JobQuestor is a place for people to discover the one-day life of a type of job. We provide two selections on the website. The user who wants to try it in real life could work with our built-in calendar function and knows the schedule of a person for a certain job. Otherwise, if the user doesn't have enough time, there is a theoretical version for people to read and learn what the job is like.

How we built it

JobQuestor is built with React, Sanity.io, and FullCalendar.

Challenges we ran into

There are many challenges that we ran into, but we still learned a lot through this fantastic hackathon (FYI: loved it last year, and love it this year). For instance, the query of the Sanity.io database was a big trouble, such as content not being rendered properly or being unable to use the right query code to search for the right information. Styling was another hard part, especially making a website responsive, there was a lot of work put in for that. The Full Calendar was also quite difficult, as we spent hours on just trying to make a calendar on our website. All-in-all though, without these challenges this website wouldn’t be existing, so we see them as opportunities.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are really proud of finishing the website and learned a lot of new knowledge throughout the us knowledge on how to use Sanity.io. That was a brand-new CMS that we never touched before. As we were programming our website, our skills to query the sanity dataset gets fluent. Moreover, we are proud of the Calendar API we used to make our website more realistic for people to try out the life of another job.

What we learned

We are really proud of finishing the website and learning a lot of new trending technologies. We used a brand-new CMS that we never touched before, which is a huge accomplishment for us. As we were programming our website, our skills to query the sanity dataset got more and more fluent. Moreover, we are proud of the Calendar API we used to make our website realistic for people to try out the life of another job.

What's next for JobQuestor

Our next step for JobQuestor is adding more jobs for people to visit and learn, also adding more functionalities, tasks, and events for users to discover and explore. Furthermore, we want to make it into a VR application so people could explore it further with a more realistic and enjoyable feeling. There are a lot of details that we also discussed as part of our future steps such as an emotional chatbot and ways to add a job by yourself, but we’ll keep the boring parts out.
