Inspiration

Job searching can be difficult for students and fresh graduates. It is not always easy to understand whether a resume matches a job, what skills are missing, how to write a good application, or how prepared someone is for an interview. We wanted to build something that could help with all these steps in one place. This led us to create JobPilot AI, a job application copilot that helps candidates from resume analysis to interview preparation.

What it does

JobPilot AI allows users to upload their resume and paste a job description. It analyzes the resume against the job requirements and provides a match score, matched skills, missing skills, relevant projects, and areas for improvement.

It can also generate professional application emails, cover letters, recruiter messages, and resume improvement suggestions.

The platform also includes an adaptive AI interviewer. It asks questions based on the job and the candidates background, changes follow up questions based on their answers, and provides feedback on technical knowledge, communication, problem solving, and role fit.

How we built it

We built the frontend using React and JavaScript and the backend using Python and FastAPI. Resume information is extracted and structured so it can be compared with the job description.

We integrated an AI service on the backend for analysis, application generation, interview questions, and interview evaluation. We also added validation and fallback logic to make the application more reliable when an AI response is unavailable or does not have the expected format.

We deployed the frontend using Vercel and the backend using Render.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was making sure the AI did not make up information about the candidate. During testing, we found that the AI could sometimes assume that a candidate had experience with a skill simply because that skill was mentioned in the job description.

We solved this by clearly separating skills that are present in the resume from skills that are required by the job but are missing. The interviewer can now ask about missing skills without assuming the candidate has experience with them.

We also had to handle meaningless interview answers, repeated application generations, unreliable AI responses, and follow up questions that were not relevant to the candidates actual answer.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that we built a complete working product rather than just a simple AI demonstration. JobPilot AI covers the full journey from resume analysis and job matching to application generation and interview preparation.

We are also proud of the work we put into making the AI more reliable. The system validates AI responses, handles invalid answers, avoids fabricating candidate experience, and uses fallback logic when needed.

The entire application is publicly deployed and can be used as a working product.

What we learned

We learned that building an AI application involves much more than connecting an AI model to a frontend. The AI needs clear context, proper validation, and safeguards against incorrect or fabricated information.

We also learned about full stack development, AI integration, prompt design, resume parsing, API development, testing, deployment, and designing a product around a real user problem.

What's next for JobPilot AI

We want to make JobPilot AI more personalized and useful throughout the job search process. We plan to improve interview evaluation, provide better skill gap recommendations, support more job application workflows, and give candidates deeper insights into how they can improve their chances of getting selected.

Our long term goal is to make JobPilot AI a complete career assistant that helps candidates understand their strengths, improve their weaknesses, apply with confidence, and prepare effectively for interviews.
