Inspiration
This game was inspired by the famous Michael Jackson's leaning forward dance move, in which he tilts his body at a humanly impossible angle. This game replicates the same mechanism with one more twist - Moving (tilting) platform. It utilizes the device gyroscope to balance.
What it does
BalanceChallenge is a balancing game in which you have to balance your Bitmoji on a moving (tilting) platform for as much time as possible. Longer the survival, the more points you score! There is also a Leaderboard component which gives this survival game a competitive spirit!
How we built it
We build it entirely on Snapchat's Lens Studio. We utilized the Bitmoji Suite to get the main playing character (Bitmoji, which is based on user's profile/avatar). The platform texture was generated using free online image generators.
Challenges we ran into
One of the most challenging part was to code the physics of both the character (Bitmoji) and the platform parallelly. After this we spent a good amount of time to tune the game physics constants (like gyroscope/tilt sensitivity, platform tilting speed, some thresholds etc.)
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of the fact that we were able to code and build a 3D game that uses gyroscope as its key component. This will help us in making gyro-based games in future as well!
What we learned
We learned using the Lens Studio for 3D game development which involves some more physics in-depth physics compared to 2D games.
What's next for BalanceChallenge
We want to add more "environmental hazards." Imagine a sudden gust of wind where you have to tilt against it, or birds flying past that distract you. We’re also looking into challenging environments such as /tightrope/narrow bridge etc. with a forward moving character instead of a stationary one.
