Inspiration

Backups fail quietly. A share gets renamed, a job is paused for a weekend and never resumed, a new folder is never added to the plan. The dashboard still shows a green check because the job ran. You find out on the day you need the file. We wanted the NAS to worry about that for you, out loud, so you don't have to.

What it does

Jitters is a small anxious monkey who lives on your NAS and treats every file as if it were his own tail. Ask him "are my photos safe?" and he:

  1. lists the files that changed in the folder you care about (last 30 days by default),
  2. looks for each one in your backup folder and compares SHA-256 checksums,
  3. checks when the backup folder last received anything,
  4. scans for duplicates that take space without protecting anything.

Then he reacts on a five-level panic scale (Calm, Twitchy, Sweating, Fifth coffee, Meltdown) and calms down into a plain status: how many files have no second copy and their size, the date the backup stopped, and the space duplicates take. If something is at risk he offers to copy exactly those files into the backup, without overwriting anything, and only after you say yes to the list.

He never deletes, moves or renames a file.

How we built it

The Skill is one SKILL.md and one reference file, the panic scale, written to the Uliya Skill Development Standard. Every step is a self-contained delegation to a registered expert: ug-filesystem and ug-filemgr through file-agent, ug-knowledge through knowledge-agent. Each step passes only the real result of the step before. All five delegation states (completed, failed, cancelled, waiting for the user, waiting for approval) are handled; if the checksum step fails, Jitters gives no verdict rather than guess.

To test without a NAS we reproduced the kit's static rules and ran the package through them (no errors, no warnings), and we modelled the four read steps on a pair of plain folders: 21 automated tests cover calm, duplicates, only-copy files, changed files, a month-old backup, an empty or missing backup, an empty window and a missing source.

Challenges we ran into

The catalog has no disk health, RAID or backup-schedule capability. Instead of pretending, Jitters judges safety from the files themselves, which is what a person actually loses, and says plainly what he cannot see.

What we learned

A status report nobody reads protects nothing. A character with a mood gets checked every week.

What's next

Validate on a real UGREEN NAS: speed of checksums on large folders, backups that rename folders, and a weekly check-in where Jitters tells you his mood before you ask.
