Jira Pets

Inspiration

This project was completed as part of the COMP3900 - Computer Science Project course in 26T1. The team of 6 Computer Science students took on Atlassian's Jira &Jira Dashboards Gadgets: Jira Pets project and completed the whole cycle in 3 months working alongside a mentor from Atlassian.

What it does

Jira Pets aims to make Jira using more interactive through gamification. It introduces a virtual pet within Jira Dashboards whose health, happiness, and level reflect a user’s activity in Jira, to drive engagement and consistency with work. Completing of Jira tickets rewards users with a virtual currency they can use to improve the wellbeing of their pet. A pet's wellbeing will reduce when tickets are not completed on time. User's can also view their colleagues friends and interact with them in a sandbox environment.

How we built it

Jira Pets was built using Forge - Atlassian’s development platform for building third party apps that integrate into Atlassian products. Alongside Forge, the Nodejs framework was used utilising, React, TailwindCSS and TypeScript. For storage, data was stored using Forge KVS. For CI/CD, integration checks were run using biome with testing conducted with vite's coverage-v8. Deployment was first done to a development Jira site followed by a push to a production Jira site.

Challenges we ran into

Deciding how gamified the project should be was a aspect of Jira Pets that was discussed thoroughly within the team and between the Client. The team eventually found a solution to this by ensuring that Jira Pets with the goal of improving productivity and ensuring the finished product was suitable for workplace usage.

Accomplishments that the team is proud of

The team went down the route of developing their own Custom UI over Atlassian's UI Kit since the prebuilt components were very limited to being customized. The end result was a clean and well integrated UI/UX.

What we learned

All members of the team gained a thorough understanding of how to work with Atlassian's Forge development platform and how to balance the ensure the end product aligned with the Client's expectations.
