Inspiration The inspiration for Jiachilie came from witnessing the struggles of people facing significant transitions in life, like those reentering society after incarceration. A personal experience, when a friend was arrested on a Friday and released on a Monday, showed how disorienting and difficult it can be to adjust back to the real world. Jiachilie was created to provide mental health support for people who feel lost during such life transitions, offering them tools and resources to reintegrate smoothly.

What it does Jiachilie is a mental health platform designed to support individuals going through tough transitions, such as recently released inmates. It offers a web app and a USSD service to ensure broad accessibility, with a chatbot powered by Gemini AI to provide personalized mental health guidance. The chatbot stores user prompts to give insights into their needs, helping organizers create targeted events and interventions to aid in their recovery and reintegration journey.

How we built it We developed Jiachilie using:

Frontend: React for building a responsive and user-friendly web app. Backend: Node.js for handling server-side logic, including the chatbot integration. Database: MySQL to store user data, chatbot prompts, and event insights. AI Chatbot: Gemini AI powers the chatbot, offering real-time responses based on user inputs, and saving those interactions for future analysis. USSD: Implemented to ensure users without internet access can still interact with the platform. Challenges we ran into We encountered a few challenges, including:

Data Sensitivity: Ensuring the privacy and security of users' mental health data was critical and required stringent security measures. Chatbot Training: Fine-tuning Gemini AI to provide empathetic, supportive responses was complex, as we wanted the chatbot to feel both personal and helpful. USSD Integration: Making sure the USSD service worked seamlessly alongside the web app, especially in areas with limited infrastructure, was a technical hurdle. Accomplishments that we're proud of Successfully integrating the chatbot with Gemini AI to offer personalized mental health support. Creating an accessible platform with both a web app and a USSD service, ensuring inclusivity for users with limited internet access. Building a system that saves chatbot prompts to provide insights for event organizers, allowing for more targeted and effective interventions. What we learned User-Centered Design: We gained a deeper understanding of the importance of building platforms that are empathetic to users' mental health needs. Scalability: Developing a platform that works across different access points (web and USSD) taught us a lot about making our system scalable and robust. Collaboration: Working with mental health professionals to create the best chatbot experience highlighted the need for cross-disciplinary collaboration. What's next for Jiachilie Expanding Features: We plan to add more tools like guided meditation, journaling, and a community forum for users to share experiences. Partnerships: Partnering with mental health organizations and rehabilitation centers to extend Jiachilie’s reach and effectiveness. Advanced Analytics: Using saved chatbot prompts and data to generate deeper insights and develop better support systems tailored to users' needs.
