Inspiration
We wanted to develop a creative way for JetBlue to reach potential flyers. We didn't want to make a stand alone application, as that would require users to explicitly look at the site/app to see the flights. Social media is a huge part of most peoples' lives, and by integrating our extension with Facebook, we have created a non-intrusive way for JetBlue to reach many interested flyers.
What it does
Our Chrome extension is active on Facebook, where it scans posts to see if they contain content relating to travel. If they do, we seamlessly insert into their feed a "post" highlighting some upcoming flights they may be interested in, based on the options they specify for the extension (what airlines, price/discounts, etc.). Users can click on these suggestions for a convenient way to learn more about these flights, as well as a way to book them. This is beneficial for both the airline and the customer by creating a match between supply and demand that would otherwise have been wasted.
How I built it
To create this product, we had to create the extension itself as well as a web server to handle requests to the database. We used python and Django for our web framework, and hosted it on Heroku. We then created the Chrome extension using Javascript to parse the Facebook feeds and to make calls to our database.
What's next for JetBlue Bargain Hunter
Being able to recognize the destinations that would most appeal to a person based on their likes, posts, and other history would be extremely useful in providing even more relevant information to these users.
