Inspiration
After the presentation about Journey's End Refugee Services, we were inspired to help them with their current problem. We wanted to do or help brainstorm whatever we could to assist them with their work.
What it does
Our app, Journey's End Refugee Services App, JERSA, can identify languages from verbal cues that allow refugees from all cultures to use public transportation with ease. We provide easy access to services, such as Google Maps, by integrating apps already in practice, allowing refugees to attain independence in their new homes. The app allows the user to save routes to reduce data usage when off Wifi. Other features include direct access to others in the community who speak their native language, filter locations based on services the client needs, and access to videos and directions for public transportation etiquette and more.
How we built it
We used Canva to create the layout and presentation.
Challenges we ran into
One challenge we overcame was the language barrier. Some languages do not have scripture, hence we primarily focused on visuals and audio.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud to be able to contribute our ideas to this wonderful non-profit to hopefully create an even more welcoming atmosphere for our new neighbors.
What we learned
During this process, we learned a lot about the refugee situation in Buffalo and the WNY region and how many non-profits in our area are working towards creating new homes for those who need them.
What's next for JERSA - Journey's End Refugee Service App
In the future, this app could be fully functional both outside the Buffalo area and beyond the borders of our country using the embedded services that are already utilized worldwide.
