Inspiration

Jejak Nusantara was born from a deep concern for the eroding state of Indonesian culture. We've observed a growing cultural crisis, fueled by the accelerating pace of globalization and a noticeable lack of early cultural education and awareness. These critical issues sparked the idea to create an interactive, modern, AI-powered platform that provides comprehensive information about Indonesian culture in an engaging way, aiming to reconnect our youth with their rich heritage.

What it does

Jejak Nusantara offers three key features designed to educate, explore, and connect users with Indonesia's rich cultural heritage:

  1. Jejak Budaya (Cultural Footprint) This interactive map allows users to explore Indonesian culture by province. It features four categories: culture (general traditions and customs), food, tourist attractions, and traditional musical instruments. This visual tool helps users easily discover the unique cultural aspects of each region.

  2. Kamus Nusantara (Archipelago Dictionary) Our interactive AI is at the heart of the Kamus Nusantara. Users can ask the AI anything about Indonesian culture, from its history and various art forms to traditional musical instruments. What's more, the AI can even translate text into desired regional languages, making it an invaluable tool for comprehensive cultural education.

  3. Komunitas (Community) This feature aims to connect people from across Indonesia, from Sabang to Merauke. It provides a platform for users to share their experiences and excitement about their respective local cultures, fostering interaction and a sense of shared heritage.

How we built it

Jejak Nusantara was built using a modern technology stack to ensure a robust, scalable, and user-friendly experience. We leveraged Next.js for our frontend development, providing server-side rendering and an excellent developer experience. TypeScript was used throughout the project for type safety and improved code quality. For styling, we utilized Tailwind CSS, allowing for rapid UI development and a consistent design system.

Our backend infrastructure was powered by PostgreSQL for data storage, managed efficiently with Prisma ORM. Docker was instrumental in containerizing our application, ensuring consistent environments across development, testing, and deployment. The core of our interactive AI features is driven by the Gemini API, enabling the "Kamus Nusantara" with its powerful language understanding and translation capabilities. Finally, Figma was our primary tool for UI/UX design, facilitating collaborative design processes and ensuring a polished user interface.

Challenges we ran into

One of the significant challenges we faced was integrating the diverse data required for the "Jejak Budaya" map feature. Sourcing, verifying, and structuring cultural information for each province across categories like food, traditions, and tourist spots was a considerable undertaking. Ensuring the accuracy and breadth of this information for the AI's knowledge base also presented its own set of complexities. Additionally, optimizing the performance of the interactive map with a large dataset required careful attention to data loading and rendering.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are particularly proud of successfully integrating the Gemini API to create the "Kamus Nusantara," an interactive AI that can educate users on various aspects of Indonesian culture and even perform regional language translations. This feature stands as a testament to our ability to leverage cutting-edge AI for cultural preservation. We're also proud of creating a comprehensive and intuitive user interface using Figma and Tailwind CSS, making the vast amount of cultural information easily accessible and engaging for users. Finally, building a functional community feature that fosters interaction among users from diverse regions is a significant accomplishment.

What we learned

Throughout the development of Jejak Nusantara, we gained valuable insights into managing large datasets for cultural information, optimizing API integrations for interactive features, and the importance of a well-defined UI/UX design process. We also learned about the complexities and nuances of cultural information, emphasizing the need for respectful and accurate representation. Furthermore, working with a distributed team across different roles highlighted the importance of clear communication and collaborative tools.

What's next for Jejak Nusantara

Looking ahead, we aim to continually enrich Jejak Nusantara by expanding our cultural content with more historical and event details, enhancing our AI for smarter interactions and personalized learning, and introducing gamification for more engaging cultural exploration. We also plan to enable offline access for key features, develop dedicated mobile applications for a seamless experience, and forge partnerships with cultural institutions to provide even more authentic information.
