InspirationThe fact that the climate is changing is well acknowledged. Although the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change warns that global warming should be kept below 2°C to avoid severe consequences, projections based on current emission trends point to much more significant warming in the long run, with possible increases of 4°C or more unless drastic action is taken to reduce emissions.

Despite the rising possibility of these extreme scenarios, few studies have been conducted to analyze their potential consequences and mitigation strategies. Existing modeling techniques and approaches do not take into consideration potential tipping points, the necessity to deal with dramatic rather than progressive change, complex relationships within sectors, and synergies and trade-offs between adaptation and mitigation activities. Decision-makers must have access to credible scientific knowledge on these unknown, but potentially high-risk future possibilities in order to make informed decisions.
