Inspiration
This project was motivated by the lack of female representation in not only careers related to STEAM, but careers in all fields. Our codes target girls in elementary school, and would be an effective tool for teachers and guardians to utilise. We wanted to give young girls the ability to envision themselves in various different fields, and foster a passion and love of learning from early on.
What it does
The code begins with a quiz, determining the users characteristics, skills and passions. They are given a career to explore based on these results. The user will then run through activities based on this career, giving them a started point to build skills and passions for various different fields.
How we built it
We began by researching which characteristics and skills lent well to different career fields, and created pseudocode based on this information to determine the correlation between responses and careers. A tally system ranks careers based on compatibility, and the user runs through minigame exercises based on their determined career. These minigames are designed for a younger demographic, and are easy to build off of, to foster future interest in various careers.
Challenges we ran into
Programming a system for career compatibility and determining the best ranking methods (conditions, points, etc.) was a difficult process as we wanted results to be as catered as possible. Determining the best method to run graphics, and coming up with suitable exercises for each career path also required a lot of research and thought.
