Jarida: Innovating Mental Wellness Through Journaling
Inspiration
Jarida was inspired by the Fancied Story Network, a mental wellness group for African youth, majorly students. While FSN provided a supportive community, we identified a gap—members lacked an effective journaling tool, despite journaling being vital for mental wellness. This inspired us to create Jarida, which means "journal" in Swahili, integrating modern technology to make journaling more engaging and accessible.
What It Does
Jarida is a mobile app that empowers students and educators to journal with ease and creativity.
AI Assistance Users receive personalized prompts to guide their journaling process, making self-reflection simple and intuitive.
Music Integration By connecting to Spotify, Jarida allows users to add music that reflects their emotions, creating a deeply personalized journaling experience tailored to our Gen Z audience.
How We Built It
Frontend Built using React Native to ensure a smooth and responsive user experience.
Backend Firebase was used for secure and scalable database management.
Integrations AI was embedded to generate dynamic journaling prompts, and Spotify’s API was utilized to enable music selection.
Testing Built on Expo, enabling testing of the app in the iOS simulator and Android emulator.
Challenges We Ran Into
Frontend Design Creating an intuitive and visually appealing interface required multiple iterations and user feedback.
Steep Learning Curve Implementing AI features and integrating the Spotify API pushed us to learn quickly under tight deadlines.
