Inspiration

Many online naming tools rely on direct literal translations that mangle cultural context and Kanji readings. We built this project to give writers, game developers, and researchers a linguistically accurate tool rooted in official Japanese family registration guidelines.

What it does

Our web engine processes cultural nomenclature with precision:

  • Validates Kanji stroke logic, Jōyō/Jinmeiyō character compliance, and furigana readings.
  • Distinguishes classical clan roots, botanical elements, and shrine titles from standard modern given names.
  • Generates full name pairings with verified English meanings and historical context.

How I built it

  • Backend Logic: PHP and JavaScript data parsing to query custom Kanji databases and extract strokes, readings, and semantic tags.
  • Frontend UI: Lightweight responsive architecture optimized for fast client-side rendering.
  • Structured Data: Custom JSON-LD schema implementation for clean entity parsing by search crawlers.

Challenges I ran into

  • Polyphonic Readings: Handling dual Onyomi and Kunyomi readings for individual Kanji characters without producing unnatural combinations.
  • Data Verification: Filtering obsolete or non-standard characters to maintain strict alignment with modern Koseki (family register) legal standards.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

  • Built a lightweight engine that generates accurate readings alongside authentic cultural meanings.
  • Developed specialized sub-modules, including the dedicated japanese boy name generator interface for historical character creation.

What I learned

  • Deep structural logic behind Japanese Jinmeiyō character sets and regional family naming history.
  • Optimization techniques for serving structured linguistic datasets with zero latency.

What's next for Japanese Name Maker | Authentic Kanji Engine

  • Expanding our research database with deep-dive breakdowns like our archive of rare Japanese surnames.
  • Adding native audio pronunciation clips and interactive historical clan maps.
