What is JANK?

JANK is a culture-first mobile word game built around the way people actually talk.

Players swipe words, chase streaks, discover slang and regional language, and play through themed city experiences. The goal was never to make another generic word puzzle with different artwork. JANK is designed so the language, sound, visual energy, humor, cities, and monetization all feel like they belong to the same world.

Why we built it

Most word games treat language like a dictionary exercise.

JANK treats language like culture.

Slang changes by city, generation, community, music, food, sports, and lived experience. We wanted a game where ATL could feel different from NOLA, where discovering a cultural word could feel more exciting than finding an ordinary three-letter word, and where the game could keep growing through new regional packs.

That idea became JANK.

Gameplay

JANK combines fast mobile word play with a more expressive arcade-style feedback system.

Players can:

  • Swipe letter paths to build words
  • Chain successful plays into streaks
  • Discover slang and culturally specific vocabulary
  • Play themed city and VIBE packs
  • Unlock additional content
  • Compete against the clock
  • Experience increasingly intense visual, audio, and haptic feedback as a round heats up

The current JANK 2 experience pushes that feedback much further with stronger streak reactions, animation, sound design, haptics, and a more distinctive visual identity.

Monetization without locking the game away

We wanted JANK to remain playable for free while giving players legitimate ways to support the game.

JANK uses a hybrid model:

Google AdMob

Free players can encounter interstitial advertising between rounds and can voluntarily watch rewarded ads to unlock certain content.

RevenueCat

RevenueCat powers JANK's native purchase and entitlement system.

JANK Pro provides a premium path with ad-free play and premium content access. RevenueCat manages the purchase state, entitlement restoration, and synchronization that allows those benefits to persist across launches and restores.

This creates a simple tradeoff for the player:

Play free with ads, earn selected unlocks through rewarded ads, or upgrade for a premium experience.

We felt that model fit the game better than forcing a subscription onto a casual word-game experience.

What we learned after launch

Shipping the game was only the beginning.

Our first public growth experiments were intentionally zero-budget. We posted gameplay, development updates, and #BuildInPublic experiments across our existing social channels and watched what players actually reacted to.

Some tests produced views but almost no engagement. Instead of calling those numbers traction, we treated them as feedback.

For example, one TikTok reached 909 views but only 2 likes, with no comments or shares. That told us awareness alone was not enough. The follow-up became a much more direct product question:

ATL or NOLA: which city would make you download JANK?

That measure → learn → change loop has shaped how we are approaching both JANK's content strategy and JANK 2.

Built in public

Building JANK publicly has forced us to be more disciplined about the difference between:

  • attention and acquisition
  • downloads and revenue
  • test transactions and real purchases
  • features in development and features actually available to players

We would rather show a small real number than manufacture a large impressive one.

That philosophy also shaped the product itself. Release validation, RevenueCat entitlements, purchase restoration, ad-free state, public-build parity, and judge access are treated as things that must actually work, not just things that look good in a demo.

What's next

JANK is designed to expand.

The roadmap includes more city and VIBE packs, international packs, deeper competitive play, regional challenges, stronger streak/fever mechanics, and additional ways for communities to see their language represented in the game.

The bigger idea is simple:

A word game can be more than a dictionary with a timer. It can feel like where you're from.
